So this is video of Merc vs Red Bull's wing deflection during the last race with a grid:

Some of the video commenters point out something really interesting though - the Mercedes' "shark fin" is flapping around like a flag. Which is interesting for a couple of reasons:

  • The fin is an aero element, and aero elements are not allowed to move, so aren't Mercedes technically in violation of the same rule they've filed a complain against Red Bull for?
  • If the fin flapping around (against the rules) provides no advantage, why allow it? Flexing parts lead to failure due to materials fatigue which then causes accidents when the vehicle's handing characteristics suddenly change.
  • If the fin is generating a low pressure zone over the rear wing by spinning up vortices, it could stall the wing leading to lower drag at high speeds, which would be conceptually identical to a bendy wing that reduces drag at high speed

Video gone. Thanks for nothing F1.

Edit, nevermind. Have to view it on YT tho.

Wow Bottas has to retire from second with a right front problem - wheel just wouldn’t come off. (Update - the lug was cross-threaded and actually machined to the mounting axle).

Hamilton has made no headway from P7. Mercedes opening the door to Red Bull here.

Perez has been the quickest car most of the race. Will he interesting to see whether we he can challenge Saintz for second. I think he’ll get around Lando.

Probably too far to go to challenge for second.

I was watching. Haven't seen an F1 race in forever. Definitely a different brand of racing from IndyCars. Takes some getting used to. The track is amazing tho. Arms gotta be tired from all of the turning on the road course.

Watching it from one of the apartments above the course would be a lot of fun. And it's Monaco.

There will be more lead changes today in the Cup race at COTA than there have been in F1 all season.

Yeah, the cars were so spread out. Not a lot of racing for position.

That track in particular is hard to pass, but we also lost two of the top three competitors (based in quali) in this race - perhaps it would have been more exciting if LeClerc and Bottas were involved.

For NASCAR-like racing action in F1, you have to focus your attention on the back of the pack. The battles between Schumacher and Mazapin have been awesome. Two guys who hate each other, have the same car, and who are desperate to outduel each other while practically nobody is paying attention. Also, there’s another rookie, Tsunoda, who’s on board dash cam is like Mr. Toad’s wild ride at Disneyworld.

Yeah, some of the camera work was great. The driver's POV was pretty awesome.

I added a pic to show Serena standing next to Max...hahaha. The difference is crazy.
