So I asked the internet and it was useless. Have an small upright non frost free freezer that probably doesn't have enough stuff in it at times, lots of ice builds up at the very top. Is there a certain way I should stock it? More or less at top?
It's just shelves evenly spaced.
Thanks

Frost? Like just a freezer or you mean fridge/freezer?

My experience is frost comes from humidity from opening too long or location (I have a chest freezer in garage and it's always frosting up after a few months due to kids opening and "looking" for whatever and it's 95 degrees in garage)
Do you have anything on top the freezer (on the outside like microwave or other stuff). Sound like possibly the insulation on top not doing best job allowing warm air to intrude

I would think it's pulling in humid air from somewhere. Does it have a fan?

Just a freezer. I only keep seafood and meat in it so it gets opened a couple of times a week. I also put kitchen trash in it that would otherwise smell up the garbage till pickup day. We keep it inside so it doesn't get hot. The only thing on top is a little broadband receiver thing. No fan.
It is old but seals okay. I guess I wondered if it's better to leave more or less space on top shelf.

I dont know that leaving more space on shelf will stop the frosting. Warmth is causing the frost to form - how its getting in is a guess at this point.

I have a frost-free chest freezer that i have to defrost every 6 mo or so because there is no way of keeping warm air ( garage kept ) out. ( see - kids above lol )

It may just be that you have to defrost every so often which, in an upright is a PIA.

I definitely defrost it, the ice just seems to form more quickly than it used to.
About your chest freezer, I used to have one and all I did was lose stuff at the bottom. Being short makes the experience more like dumpster diving, I don't know how your kids reach in there, unless it's a team effort lol

Same here- would "forget" because of all the stuff piled on top.

So i had purchased during Covid and have since realized WE DONT EAT ENOUGH to keep 2 fridge freezers AND a chest FREEZER full .

So that chest freezer is now, icee pushups, Flavo ICE sticks, and whatever other sugary frozen confection the kids want. (might be a bag or 3 of chicken nuggets )

but no more meats, seafood etc. too wastefull.

I have the same freezer with the same problem. I’m sure it’s caused by warm air when opening it. And it’s a PITA to defrost.

I thought it was going the mafia route.
But no. Just appliance talk. Which I sadly enjoyed. What in the hell is happening to me?
i always go straight to muppet porn
