How do you get rid of them?

All of a sudden, my kitchen seems to be the gnats new home. There must be 30 or more of them and I'm not sure how to go about getting rid of them. Don't really want to spray bug killer all over the place. I've been swatting at them with a dish rag, but that doesn't seem to phase them.

Anyone have a good way to get rid of these things?

Thanks

They have a very short lifespan. Get rid of all sources of water they can drink and they'll be gone in a few days. As long as there's a ready supply of moisture, they'll breed and stay around.

Yeah, those things started showing up here as well.. Always seems like there's always a bunch of bananas that hung around too long or something. Don't know if that's where they came from or how they started ?? But yeah we get rid of anything and everything sitting around in the kitchen, keep everything wiped down real good.. and they tend to disappear.

gnats or fruit flys?

Very similar. I never seen gnats in the house and I live in gnat country.

I'm not sure I know the difference between the two but I get those in my house every year around this time. Make sure you take your trash out regularly. I notice them flying around my trash can if it's starting to get full.

During the daytime I'll turn off all the lights in the house and raise the blinds on a few windows and wait a couple minutes for them to flock to the window one by one chasing the sunlight. Then I'll smack em with a rolled up magazine or something. It's actually kinda fun but I'd rather not have to deal with them.

If they're fruit flies, they'll be attracted to sweet liquors. Get a small bowl and pour in just bit (1/2 oz should do it) of Grand Marnier or Triple Sec. They'll fly into it and drown.

this ^^

Red wine works well, too. You only need a small amount.

Definately fruit flies, red wine does work but does not rid the problem. Just clean up real good, pour bleach down drains.

But then I'd hear an annoying buzd-ing sound in the middle of the night as the sealed bottles were flown off... :)
