good article about announcers (1 Viewer)

The article: "...whereas the new breed of big-name play-by-play guys fancy themselves as announcers, storytellers, analysts AND social commentators. ... it has been taken to another level by Michaels and Joe Buck. Now, just about everyone is following suit. You can't just provide play-by-play these days; you have to unleash a steady stream of opinions, too."

This is what I wrote on another thread concerning Cosell, which Bill Simmons champions,...

The American networks do not understand how to get people to watch MNF again. They don;t understand the personality and chemsitry that developed between Cosell and Don Meredith, Frank Gifford, etc,... Really Cosell. Cosell, love him or hate him was a man with an opinion and he wasn't afraid to share it. He had an opinion about everything related to the sports industry and about life itself.

MNF wasn't a game, it was an event to savor. You didn't just watch the game. You were entertained; sometimes you were angered, others just laughed. Dennis Miller or Kornheiser will never be a Howard Cosell. There will probably never be a guy like Cosell ever again. Most of the play- by- play guys play it safe. It seems we are moving further and further away from what made that group so enticing to watch.

He seems to agree with me,... "we don't know if Kornheiser could be the next Cosell because he hasn't found his Meredith and Gifford yet."

He seems to think Jaws and Vermiel will work best with Kornheiser. Part of the Chemsitry among the Early MNF announcers was they were not exactly the closets of friends. There was a certain amount of animosity between them. It makes it real. This is my problem with Theisman and McGuire. Their "animosity" was obviously fake.

Generally speaking, he needs to make up his mind. Does he want the Cosell model with all the controversy or does he want straight shooting play by play guy.

"[Ron Pitts is] one of my favorites because of his humorless, businesslike, Summerall-esque style. He doesn't care about entertaining us.

Right now one of my favorite announcers is not an American, its a South African, who announces South African Rugby Football matches. He reminds me a lot of a Cosell type announcer. He tells you wants happening (which Bill Simmons likes), and he is a straight shooter who gives you the facts that you need to know. He even has a similar cadence in his speech to Cosell, 'cept its with a South African accent. For the life of me, I cannot remember his name. I am watching the SA rugby team now and he is calling the game. When I hear is name, I will know it. Will Post.

i thought it was a good read too, do i have to tell you why i think that?

If you are going to go through the trouble of posting a link to an article, I would think you would have an opinion about it. I don't think I have ever posted an article without passing my highly opinionated thoughts on the matter. The only reasin I bother to click on the link is because i just finish writing a post about the very subject. Ordinarily, if someone don't mention why the like it (agree with it) or dislike it (disagree with it), I will never click on it. To me, he could just posted, "I think some people have interesting points a view about announcers, " and leave it at that.

Did I mention Ivalue my own opinion? :ezbill:

He's not saying that he favors someone who gives you a lot of opinions, what he is saying is that these days the big execs. want someone who will fill you with tons of opinions and stories about the player growing up, because that appeals to the casual fan.

Wow! I read the article once and thought it scked. Then I read it aganwith St. Pikes opinionsinserted, and thought it as GREAT!

I suggest that the mods force everyone to state an opionion on every thread, from here on out. Sure it might take 8 hours to read every thread, but imagine the quality of each thread.

maybe it's because i didn't want to force my opinion on you before you read it, i have my own opinions and i wanted you to formulate your own

This isn't the opinion he seems to indicate further down. Everyone of the play by play guys he likes are straight shooters, not the Cosell type at all.
to reiterate, "Sure, Pitts gets some credit here -- he's one of my favorites because of his humorless, businesslike, Summerall-esque style. He doesn't care about entertaining us. " It doesn't sound like to me he wants to hear Cosell opinions.

You right he slams the execs for creating the mediocrity we have today in sports commentating.

One of the reasons we are fed mediocrity is execs don't like to take chances. Its like the music industry. We get imitation bands over and over again, until a "rebellious" producer finds a new sound, then they all immitate it until the cycle repeats itself. Its the same thing with TV, no one wants to lose any ratings by taking a gamble on a new refreashing comentator. This is another one of his mew complaint

He states this about Palmer color comentations, ...Palmer just cared about picking the game apart and telling me what was happening and why. And you know why he was like that? BECAUSE NOBODY HAS GOTTEN TO HIM YET. He hasn't had a network exec say to him, "Hey, we want to make you one of our marquee guys, but our research tells us that you aren't appealing to casual fans. We need more anecdotes and stories from you."

It seems to me, he wants Cosell without all of the controverial garbage. There is one thing I agree with, immitating Cosell just produces a cheap knock copy,... maybe we shouldn't wish for it afterall.
