GREAT Saints summary by Duncan

I look at it this way....Sean Payton basically "stood pat" with his 2006 roster in '07. That roster had taken him all the way to the NFCCG with both the Offense and Defense learning new systems. The team should have been even better in '07 after the players were in the systems longer. So he drafted depth and signed few FAs. The problem with "standing pat" is in '06 was teams clearly underestimated the Saints and Defenses were perplexed by Payton's O. In '07 teams knew the Saints weren't going to be pushovers and after their playoff success suddenly were circled as a "big game" on their opponents schedules. The Saints responded to the target on their chests......poorly. 2007 was waste of one Brees precious and finite seasons. 2008 was injury riddled. 2009 will be a defensive overhaul with Gregg Williams. I have high hopes for Williams but they are tempered by the knowledge of limited cap space, few draft picks, and limited talent on the defensive side of the ball. Williams can only do so much with what the team has on hand and I think far too many fans are expecting miracles........

The failures were more about scheme, overconfidence and lack of a killer instinct than any of those other decisions. GW will change that.

the same thing will happen again if we take wells at 14

yes...and if we get jenkins we will have maybe a good FS 3 years from now ... that would be an amazing pick ...::jpshakehead:

we need guys that can contribute now ... maybe a FS, but not in the first ....a running back would make an impact right now ....

I agree a linebacker could be DROY.

Are we just bad at drafting or were we unlucky? For instance was David Jones a reach for his position and selection? Antonio Pittman? Marvin Mitchell? Usama Young? Andy Alleman? Bushrod? etc.

I ask this because it seems this board gets better at the draft each year. Just saying, if we would ve hit on some of those and were starters now, we would nt be looking for a RB , OLB and CB.

Andy Alleman was a starter at the end of the season for the Dolphins. I think like 8 teams tried to claim him off waivers when the Saints cut him. Pittman is still playing somewhere as a backup, I think.

In my opinion, if you look at payton's three drafts you can see a change of trend. In 2006 our best picks were players selected for their potential more than their production in college. In 2007, we went mostly on players like that and it was a huge failure. In 2008, we did the exact opposite, proven player from big programs that were not workout warriors but real football players, and we were much more successful. I expect something like that this year.

And David Jones played in 14 games and started 7 for the Bengals last season.

Good read. The Leigh Torrence pickup is indeed an interesting one, considering Payton seems to put him ahead of both David and Young. I think Young will definitely be asked to switch to FS. Hopefully, he can make the transition and at least provide solid depth there. The FO has done a much better job since 2007 at acquiring players, IMO.

Yeah, I forgot about him. He looks promising for the Bengals. I don't think there's anything wrong with the scouting dept. Pierre Thomas, Alleman, Jones, Pittman are all legit NFL players out of college that were added during that offseason. Criticism should be focused on why we gave up on Jones and Alleman too early, though. If they are good enought to start for other teams, they were good enough to be depth for the Saints imo.

Everybody needs to remember that we did get Pierre Thomas. It's a fact that seems to be getting glossed over by Duncan and others.

So we're a getting better with exp. drafting I assume. The small school selections, do u all think that our scouts are just that good at finding gems or was it just an experiment that failed therefore they learned their lesson? In other words was Colston just luck?

Colston isn't luck, in that, when it was the Saints turn to pick at #250-whatever in the draft, they looked at the list of 1000 available college players and they chose him. They had to make the decision that of all the remaining talent, Colston had the best chance to make it in the NFL. Obviously, they were right. So it wasn't just luck imo.

He pretty much stated the obvious. The average joe fan might find interesting tibits.
