Greetings from Planet Earth's Butthole! (1 Viewer)

For anyone's information, I am in Afghanistan, and I am not being paid for it. I'm trying to spread that to as many people as I can. My wife was also told (I was not) that the special pays for Afghanistan deployments might simply not ever be paid.

I am at Camp Bastion, and we can't watch any game because of the governmet shut down. Stupid AFN is only playing CNN and Fox News. Oh and Sky sports, argh can't wait to get home in february!

Is this about the Falcons' new stadium? I'm confused.

that would have made more sense with the thread title.

Afghanistan is more like one of planet earth's arteries

Afghanistan has been an ancient focal point of the Silk Road and human migration. Archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation from as far back as the Middle Paleolithic. Urban civilization may have begun in the area as early as 3,000 to 2,000 BC.[10] Sitting at an important geostrategic location that connects the Middle East culture with Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent,[11] the land has been home to various peoples through the ages[12] and witnessed many military campaigns, notably by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and in modern era Western forces.[10] The land also served as a source from which the Greco-Bactrians, Kushans, Hephthalites, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Mughals, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

.......

Excavations of prehistoric sites by Louis Dupree and others suggest that humans were living in what is now Afghanistan at least 50,000 years ago, and that farming communities in the area were among the earliest in the world. An important site of early historical activities, many believe that Afghanistan compares to Egypt in terms of the historical value of its archaeological sites.

The country sits at a unique nexus point where numerous civilizations have interacted and often fought. It has been home to various peoples through the ages, among them the ancient Iranian peoples who established the dominant role of Indo-Iranian languages in the region. At multiple points, the land has been incorporated within large regional empires, among them the Achaemenid Empire, the Macedonian Empire, the Indian Maurya Empire, the Islamic Empire and the Sassanid Empire.

Update: Navy changes shutdown pay guidance, says bonuses and special pays are safe | Navy Times | navytimes.com

Shutdown exemption for military pay becomes law | Army Times | armytimes.com

Shutdown hits Marine Corps base services | Marine Corps Times | marinecorpstimes.com

In fact, Marines —and servicemembers throughout the Defense Department — will continue to receive all types of pay including hazardous duty and imminent danger pay.

The political trolling on this issue is a sad abuse of the goodwill most of us have towards servicemen. For months it's been known that the pay was guaranteed by a special appopriation. At the 12th hour there was some attempt to spin out rumors that special pays only were going to be withheld. For over a week now there's been ample coverage explaining that not even special pay is at risk in the slightest, and this was all available direct from the military press well before the OP started posting it here.

OP should be ashamed for promulgating this quite a while after the early attempts to fire up the public over this were dispelled by all branches of the armed forces.

This would be the time that I will step up as a 17-year veteran and ask you kindly to suck it up. You'll get your money, worst case, when you file your travel voucher upon your return. We're all volunteers and the service is larger than us. There are several people there in your position, but we have to keep fighting. While I can not prevent you from expressing your feelings, the fact that you want to spread this to as many people as possible is disturbing to me. We are unique professionals with obligations that most people cannot comprehend and we must behave as such. That being said, stay safe over there and be patient.
