Starting at 12:00PM ET on August 28th teams can begin signing players to their practice squads.

Practice squad basics

  • Practice squad players practice with the team. They do not play in games, unless they are elevated.
  • Practice squad players are paid per week and can be released at any point during the season.
  • Practice squad players are free to sign with other NFL team, but they have to be signed to the 53-man active roster of the acquiring team. A practice squad player cannot be signed to another practice squad unless he is first released or waived.
  • A practice squad player cannot sign with his team’s upcoming opponent unless he does so six days before the upcoming game, or 10 days if his team is currently on a bye week.
  • If a practice squad player is signed to the active roster, he will receive a minimum of three weekly paychecks, even if he is released before spending three weeks with the new team.
  • In order to be signed to a practice squad after being released, a player who is not a vested veteran must first clear waivers, and is subject to waiver claims by other teams

Practice squad players moving up to the main roster

Like last season, teams now have more flexibility with using practice squad players on game day. PS players can be activated on game day before the team announces their inactives (90 minutes before game time). The player doesn’t have to be elevated from the PS to the main roster for the move. This can happen with up to two practice squad players per week. A player is now able to be elevated three times per season. To be activated a fourth time requires the player to be signed to the regular roster.

This makes it easier for teams to have players they know and trust on game day, and also not have to subject them to waivers when they are signed to the main roster and cut to get back to the practice squad.

We are slotted at pick 14 on the waiver wire as well.

If someone can update the additions to the practice squad tomorrow here, would be great!

As of now we only have Kamara and Mims at RB, unless you add Taysom to that mix. Extremely thin here

We have Alvin Kamara and Taysom Hill as the top RBs. There’s no unless there. Taysom will have a featured role at RB in Kubiak’s offense. The blocking scheme is also favorable for Jamaal Williams judging by his performance in the 49ers preseason game. Mims will mainly have a passing down role.

I think it’s very likely that no backup RB on the Saints roster nor backup FA addition will outrush Taysom in yards and YPC. Taysom appears to be the 2nd RB.

How is WR Tim Patrick already signed to the Lions practice squad? Did the Lions tamper with him? Yahoo Sports put out an story citing Adam Scheftner as the source

Released vested veterans don’t have to wait until the next day PS window to sign to practice squads. Some players like Tim Patrick and Mike White took a head start if it’s a good situation.

Most teams are waiting for players to clear waivers to sign them to their practice squads. Those are younger players with less than 4 years of experience.

I think you’re allowed to reach out to players the moment they are cut or even before you cut them if they are on your team. Just can’t officially sign them and submit paperWork until tomorrow

I seem to remember us cutting players but telling them we would bring them back the next day

Edit: thanks for veteran clarification, SonOfNola

Watch how Tipton gets used like a Sproles/Wes Welker type receiver. I really think, they gonna sneak him in there on short slants/Wheel routes!

If Kubiak does it right, You got alot more weapons then you think in the run game/Screen Game!

Almost 1,200 players were cut yesterday who will be candidates for about 500 practice squad positions league wide. About 700 of these players won't get a PS spot.

The group you assembled above are all worthy candidates for the Saints PS, and a good number of spots will be filled by them.

However, some will choose to sign elsewhere, some may not get signed at all, and the Saints will most likely bring several players in who were cut by other teams.

The bottom of the practice squad is constantly changing throughout the year. So is the bottom of the 53-man roster. Looking forward to seeing who the Saints sign.
