I don't see any weaknesses. That is, I don't see any coaching position: Offense, Defense or Special Teams (or scouting position) in which we are BELOW AVERAGE compared to the talent level in today's NFL.

Finks had some good drafts, but I don't remember a stronger Saints team, top to bottom, than what we have this year.

Whatever Payton, Loomis, and Ireland have cooking, I hope they keep it up for a long time...

Was watching Coach Westhoff a couple of days ago on a replay of Hard Knocks. He was coaching special teams for the Jets around the 2012 season. He was quite impressive. No doubt in my mind he's going to help turn the Saints' special teams units into a force. Special teams could even help win a couple of games this year.

It was bad enough with Bill Johnson & McMahon. But if you can't remember Carl Smith or Rick Venturi... you don't know how bad it could be!

I know Rick Venturi personally and I can tell you that he is as good a person as there is but for whatever reason his coaching did not translate to the players and it certainly didn't show up on the field.

It's a shame cause he's such a great guy.

The most important thing for us going forward will be how do we replace all these guys. Because if our defense takes another major step forward, I'm talking about being mentioned as possibly elite? Dennis Allen is getting a head coaching gig somewhere. And I expect Aaron Glenn to get a DC gig somewhere. As might Mike Nolan.

I think we can hold on to Ryan Nielsen for another year or two since he's still very new to the NFL game.

Maybe they all go nowhere...but it'll be hard to. One thing I know, is I've never been more confident in our young players developing into something considerable before, assuming we don't get beat to hell by injuries again.

Reggie Wayne last night was raving about Curtis Johnson. He said Michael Thomas under Curtis Johnson will be a Top 5 WR in the league.

Pleasant problems to have with this suddenly top-notch staff of assistants and scouting department.

It might be the first test of the Gayle Benson era in the ownership chair if Dennis Allen gets offers to leave. Do you overpay to keep him?

Yes, the organization needs to keep these guys together somehow. I take it as a good sign that SP seem to get along much better with DA than previous OC's.

But,,, every Head Coach should groom a quality backup for all position coaches, because good ones are alphas and want to move up.

Indeed. I'm thinking that's where having Ryan Nielsen in-house already might be huge.

No, not by a long shot.

SP finally has what he says he wanted when he first arrived on the scene: He wants coaches who continually teach!

And then throw in Ireland and the scouting dept and their huge successes, the Saints are a force to be reckoned with!

Hopefully for a very long time!

Reminds me of mixed martial arts. Many of the fighters call their coach "sir", and every second of practice is teach, teach, teach. Sparring partners teach, specialists fly in and teach, sometimes the teaching doesn't stop in actual fights. That's why we love our position coaches and want them to stay put.

Agreed. I jus posted recently that IMO, this is the best staff of “teaching coaches” in the SP era! When the time comes to hiring new coaches, one of the prerequisites for da job had better be that they can TEACH!!

In terms of improved scouting, I think a major factor is that the team has developed a better, more definitive “player profile”. Along with talent and athleticism, intangibles like character, self discipline, maturity, and esp mental toughness/intelligence/high football IQ are now being factored in more. Its no absolute, but overall, such qualities make for a better STUDENT!

Better TEACHER + better STUDENT =

Better FOOTBALL PLAYER !

Venturi will always have a soft spot in my heart because, IIRC, he was the only one who would step in as interim coach after Jim Mora bailed out.

Be that as it may, he just didn’t have it as a coach @ the NFL level.
