There reportedly was a riff or some degree of lingering bitterness between Tom Benson and Mills or his agent for many years after he left via FA or the compensation/expansion draft for Carolina Panthers and Jaguars pre-1995 season. I think Benson saw or viewed Mills' departure as a betrayal since Saints and Benson had taken a chance on him in picking him up from the USFL expansion draft after that league folded in 1986 and during Sam's career in New Orleans, the two had a very close relationship.

NFL HOF doesn't ask players to select a team to represent them as they are inducted, that's the MLB HOF--due to all players busts wearing caps. The NFL just has a plain head bust. I agree it was a mistake to let Mills go, he was the team's best player, but the Saints were in the old "burn it all down" mode that not surprisingly lasted the rest of the 90's rather than the 1-3 years they were hoping.

It's weird when you google image Sam, 75% of the pics are of him as a Panther, when in reality he played 75% of his career here. For what it's worth, his family asked Jim Mora to be the presenter at the HOF, and the HOF website shows only Saints pics: https://www.profootballhof.com/players/sam-mills/

It might ring in the beginning of the season but this game has to be one of the worst preseason games each year
