how can the offense NOT take a step back? (3 Viewers)

On one hand, I think that anyone who pretend that who we have at receiver doesn't matter because Brees would make anyone look great is either a hypocrite or has a short memory. Just look at 2013, our pass protection was pretty good but when Graham went down our offense could not move the ball and everyone was complaining that our WR couldn't get separation.

So yes, we do need some of these young guys to step up because if they don't we won't be that good. We do have a lot of player with potential but potential and production are not always the same thing.....

We couldn't run the ball effectively in 2013. That was our biggest problem on offense. Without a threat of a run game, teams were able to corral our receivers a little more easily. And yet we still had a very good offense that year, overall.

I don't think anybody is arguing that Brees doesn't need some talent around him to succeed. The team has always found some standouts and then plugged-in role players.

A foundation of Colston, Cooks, Spiller, Ingram, and Watson looks like a solid starting point at the skill positions and then the consideration becomes whether some of the more unknown/unproven players are ready to step up.

There are certainly question marks but the cupboard isn't bare of talent.

We all know that Payton's offense is predicated on creating mismatches. Spiller, when healthy (like Jimmy) is every bit the mismatch that Graham is. Colston transitioned from Option #1 -> #2 when Jimmy broke out, and now he is moving to Option #3 behind Cooks and Spiller. The Saints are really trying to find that #4 option who is going to see 60 targets. Could be Watson, Hill, Coleman, Jones, Snead, we aren't sure yet.

But, history shows us that the Saints will move the ball down the field.

1) the addition of Spiller will give the offense that Sproles/Bush weapon that was missing last year

2) massive upgrade at center will help Brees out and improve the running game

3) Ben Watson ain't no slouch

The Watson/Hill combo at TE is eerily similar to Shockey/Thomas - Hill being the taller, faster Shockey-type receiver who can also block a little bit, Watson being the Thomas all-around versatile great blocker type. They're even the same size roughly - Hill is 6-5, 250, Shockey was 6-5, 251 - Thomas 6-3, 248, Watson 6-3, 255.

Ingram-Spiller-Robinson is also a fair approximation of Thomas-Bush-Bell, I would even argue that the current group is a little more well-rounded than the 2009 group.

The main difference right now is we don't have depth receivers like Meachem/Moore/Henderson - but then again, Meachem was a draft bust before 09, Henderson was a middling inconsistent deep threat before 09, and Moore barely even played that season. It's not inconceivable at all that some combination of Coleman/Jones/Toon/Morgan/Snead/whoever can fill those shoes.

How does the offense not take a step back? By running the ball a lot better.

The number one offense rarely wins the Super Bowl. Truth be told, the number 1 defense is far more likely to bring back a Lombardi than the number 1 O.

If Ingram, Spiller, and Robinson can deliver a top 5 rushing offense, the Saints will be more likely to finish out games and should take the NFC South with ease.

In yards, maybe a step back. In wins, I am much more optimistic.

Come on bro! Spiller isn't even close to the mismatch nightmare Jimmy Graham is. You lost me with that comment. Spiller is an explosive cat, but he hasn't been used in the Bush/Sproles role before (really). To say he's "every bit" the mismatch Graham is sounds just plain ignant.

Freakonomics » Does Defense Really Win Championships?

Thats a myth.

It also sounds "ignant" to believe the Saints offense can't be good without Jimmy Graham when they were a top offense for 5 straight years before he even came along, as if Payton and Brees have no idea how to run an offense without him around.
