Ian Rapoport: Saints to make a decision on Taysom Hill; hard to imagine Hill returning [T.Hill is turning 35 w/ 18M cap hit & ACL recovery] (4 Viewers)

At some point we're going to see him struggle in his role due to age. I honestly don't know when that will be. There's already hints that its begun, for example often being injured this past season. He played 8 out of 17 games.

As much as I hate to say it, his contract was awful. If the goal is to cut a player before you owe them a bunch of money and they struggle to contribute due to age, we should be moving on from him.
People love Taysom Hill, and he is an impact player but there is a decision that needs to be made on him and other players on the Saints roster when it comes to how this team operates going forward, Hill's name should come up because of his contract, age and injuries.

If Hill is healthy I think he can be a valuable utility player with limited snaps each week. To stay on the roster, however, I believe he will have to take a significant pay cut as there are only so many places where Loomis can find cap savings!

Let Johnson go and draft a TE in the later rounds. Johnson has been inconsistent and just an average player.

Johnson is our most productive pass-catching TE, though Moreau stepped up his game this past season.

I'd be fine with the market determining if Johnson is back. I think he's shown enough to be in the mix of competition, but not enough to be a player the team has to prioritize if the salary doesn't make sense on their end. A late round pick isn't likely replacing his production anytime soon, so the team would either need to target TE earlier or look for an upgrade in free agency.

Unless he takes a pay cut, his contract is basically a wash one way or the other this year. If you cut him you have $17.7 in dead money cap hit. If you keep him it’s $17.9 cap hit. The real decision was supposed to be next year but his injury complicates things.

When he got here, one of the things people were saying about him is that he struggles in the first year of a new offense. I don't know that we saw that here but we also never saw him in year two with either coordinator he's had here. If he's still year, this will be his 5th coordinator in 5 years.
I think Saints fans especially need to stop being distracted by the noise. There’s too much parroting of paid actors’ opinions. When you’re deciding on something, take a second to let the swirling wind of noise dissipate, then look within. Report what you believe. Ok that’s my public service announcement. Carr didn’t struggle with KK’s offense at all. I think Carr needs to know if he’s still being considered as a long term solution, and if he is, I would expect he and Moore to hit the books together. If not, and if I were Carr, I’d take advantage of free agency this year and seek a trade. The Jets would be my first option. Followed by Pitt. However, Mickey must get something for him, like a 2nd round pick.

The noise? Parroting of paid actors? lol.

Anyway, Carr isn't a long term solution. He can't be. He's a 34 year old mid tier QB with an untenable contract. And no team is giving the Saints a 2nd round pick for Derek Carr. I don't think a team would even give us a 4th round pick for him. We have no leverage at all just like the Raiders didn't. And there are as good or better options out there for those teams for cheaper and without draft compensation.

Plus we stop some dead money from hitting the cap this year if Johnson gets a new contract. I'm fine either way, but I do think he's a solid pass catching TE when healthy so there is no reason to run him off if a reasonably cheap deal can be reached. And for all we know Moore may want to convert him back to WR.

If we do sign him, if we find an upgrade in the draft great, but if not, Johnson would keep our floor for a pass catching TE relatively high for hopefully a relatively cheap number.

Some of this will have to do with what they do with Carr. If they let him go, they will probably need to do deals with guys like Johnson, and give extensions to guys like Olave, Shaheed, and Taylor to get under the cap.

Was reading earlier that Moore could use Hill like a Hurts style qb. Now I know alot of people has that ship sailing with Taysom as QB, but he does have a 6-2 or 6-3 record as a starter something like that. Anything is possible with an offensive mind like Moore. Definitely would be better than a Milroe in my opinion.

This would be incredibly foolish, expecting him to hold up over a full season as a RPO QB, I really don't think Moore will do this....

IF TH returns, I think he will use him but even more sparingly than in the past....

If you looked up the word Football Player in the dictionary, his name should be listed or considered in the definition. He's gives his all on the field of play and brings no drama to the locker room or social media. Out of all the old contracts and old players on the roster, he has the most upside to help the Saints. For the right price, he's still valuable.

Carr is going to be 34 years old. He isn't anyone's long term solution at QB regardless of how good anyone thinks he is. And we know that Moore has concerns about our QB situation which means he's clearly not totally sold on Carr as the starter. So I don't really think it's just noise. Especially given how much Carr is to be paid this year. A decision does need to be made. But, I suspect that Carr will be here another year and then released next year given our cap situation. (Wouldn't be my choice, but I think that is what they will do.) And that kind of decision is going to be made with a lot of players this year because we have a new HC. New HCs generally want to remold the roster the way they want so some guys may be going that we see as important. At the same point, I think our cap situation limits any makeover of the roster which is probably why Mickey told Moore they would be patient and why this will be seen as a mulligan year.

As far trading Carr, he has a no trade clause so I think he would refuse any trade to force a cut if the Saints really want to get rid of him. Mostly because that's what he did with the Raiders.

But I do think Carr is in an odd situation because he's going to be 34 so if he is going to get another 3 year contract, instead of having to take 1 year deals, he may need to get that this year. He's likely not going to get that here, so maybe he would prefer to move on and get a 3 years deal this year? I doubt he gets a contract that long after this year.

Cut dead weight waaaay before letting go of TH...don't be dumb like the Mavs lol

Taysom is a great guy and a great player when healthy, but he is not a 25 year-old franchise player.

I wish Taysom was 25 and not coming off of multiple serious injuries, but he is. They are going to have to limit his touches to try to keep him healthy or just go YOLO knowing that at some point he will get hurt. That means you can't make him the centerpiece of the offense. That likely means he needs to take a pay cut.

yep. All of that. Matt Mascona a paid actor, ranted hard on the day Carr was signed by the Saints. He ranted : "we already know who Carr is, we have a 9 year sample" and "the emperor of empty yards" The latter sorcery was dispelled this year. But yet the parrots parrot on. (not necessarily here, all over social media) When im pretty sure that 100% of the parrots would not tell those things to Carrs face. Other paid actors are twitter "influencers" that brainstorm titles that will trigger clicks, the parrots also roll with that sorcery as their own. I like Matt but i also know who he is, he's a paid actor that knows how to successfully trigger the Saints fan base. Dont believe me? Wait until Moore makes a questionable decision, you'll say to yourself, wow, i thought this coach was exactly what the majority wanted, (young offensvie) but yet he's tearing it apart for clicks. This isnt to down Matt, he does a great job. But fans can be easily influenced. Even Raider fans are like, wow these Saints fans hate Carr.. I could go on an on. This isnt pro Carr either, my point is, if you're going to talk trash, at least be factually accurate, otherwise its just hateful graffitti. About Carr and a 2nd round pick, a deperate enough team that only needs an above average Qb to make a run, could be leveraged a lot more that Saints fan believe he's worth, and thats a bag of chips.

And we know that Moore has concerns about our QB situation which means he's clearly not totally sold on Carr as the starter.

Completely understandable that he would, but I'm curious to hear what he says publicly, and more importantly, how he addresses the position during the offseason. Has he discussed the position publicly yet (I'm assuming he hasn't, but I don't know that for a fact) or has there been another source besides what Russini mentioned? I don't follow her, or know much about her, but I've seen she's on the receiving end of a lot of criticism online, and questions raised about her credibility. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything, either.

Concern can cover a lot of ground, too. As you said, Carr can only be a short-term answer at his age, and now considerations about durability, and we don't know, beyond a doubt, what we have in the young guys on the roster - I think especially, Rattler. Concern could be uncertainty or it could be a conclusion that the position group needs to be overhauled.
