Loved this cover so had to look up the band. Only GREAT album covers can do that.
I remember browsing albums in record shops and asking the owner to play a record based on the cover alone. Great advertising.

To me "iconic" means self-identifying. You don't need ANY words on the cover...no band name, no album title. They might be there, but if you took those things out, you'd still know. You guys have covered most of what I would have thought of. But I think I'd also add:

I don't think they were big in the States but in the UK even non metal fans would recognise this design as Motorhead. First album.

gpupil...yes & no. the words are gone, so it certainly qualifies in that respect....that's exactly what I meant. But I still don't know...so it fails in that respect. In all fairness though, I have a pretty narrow spectrum of preferred genres, so maybe it still qualifies. but I don't know what that album is...

ahhh....not a Beatles fan, here, but I know I'm in an overwhelming minority on that one. even so, I've heard of the White Album, so yeah....that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about. No band name, no album title, and probably everyone but me knew what album that was?! LOL!

Metallica Black Album comes pretty close. Definitely a spartan album cover there.
