Paging Severum.

I’m pretty sure it’s a falcon. It looked very cold and didn’t really mind me walking pretty close to it. My neighborhood has a lot of wildlife and I regularly see red-tail hawks (a big male lives in the oaks across the street), owls, and osprey - and there’s a pair of bald eagles just up the river that fly over from time to time.

But I have never seen a falcon near my house. I know that they are indigenous to the area.

My guess would be a juvenile red-tailed hawk.

His feathers look a little scruffy to be an adult bird.

Did you yell '28-3' at it to see if it collapsed in response to truly test your hypothesis that it's a falcon? B/c, science!

I was really hoping for a Dodo or an Auk or Elephant Bird or Moa or some other weird extinct bird that was suddenly found alive in your yard. All the cool animals are dead.

Looks a little like a blur bird. I don't think Severum's ever taken a photo of one of those.

I don’t think it’s broad enough to be a juvenile red tail. Not that I’m an expert, but it has the slim look of a falcon.

Apparently the way to tell the difference between a hawk and a falcon is the beak.

2. Falcons have a notch on their beaks while hawks have a simple curve on the beak. 3. Falcons grab their prey with the beaks while hawks use talons on the feet to kill prey.

Sharp Shinned Hawk... or a Cooper's Hawk...

One of the two I believe.

Probably a red tailed hawk, but it could also be a red shouldered hawk, which is similar in appearance but about half the size.

Is it just me or does that beak look more straight than the hawks?
