If you were a cop, how would you respond to this incident? (1 Viewer)

This is why every time one of those videos of police officers using a taser comes out and people start hollaring about police brutality, I take it with a huge grain of salt.

Did some research and found OSP carries glock 9mm and 40 not certain what this trooper was using at the time.

I'm surprised nobody is bashing the cops.

9mm doesn't have a lot of stopping power. It also depends on what ammo OSP uses. Did that show up in your investigation Det Brees?

Kind of hard to blame the cop in this situation. Some cases clearly show the cop being in the wrong, some cases are questionable and then cases like this, the cop had little choice.

The cop did get shot in his side though it was very minor.

After shots were exchanged, Van Allen(bad guy) got back into his car and drove off. While Zistel(cop) was shot in the side, it turns out he also struck the shooter as well.
Allen was found dead inside his car just half a mile away from the scene, police said in a news release. An autopsy revealed he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

He was also an army vet and all three of his kids were in the car. Must have been terrible for the kids to witness.

The Army veteran's three children -- a 10-year-old girl and two boys, ages 13 and 15 -- were in the back seat of the car when the gunfire erupted, police said. While they were unharmed, they have been placed in state custody.
Zistel was treated for a minor gunshot wound.

I thought the cop handled the situation perfectly.

I also think carrying a 9mm opens a lot of opportunity to get shot even after hitting your target.

I wouldn't carry less than a .40mm with hollow points. A whole lot more power without sacrificing much in the way of capacity and without a huge increase in size or weight.

The reality is that handguns just aren't as powerful as Hollywood and the media would like us to believe. Even the people claiming a .45 delivers instant stopping power are wrong. Shot placement is much more important than power and this officer proved exactly why that is. However, a .40 hollow point has almsot twice the impact and destructive force power of a 9mm and it certainly doesn't hurt the cause. In this case, a direct hit to the chest and this would have been over a whole lot quicker.

As for the officer, it is so near perfect it'll probably be used in training for a very long time.

It's situations like this that make me remember exactly why I'm glad I'm not a cop, and why I'm appreciative of the ones that are. Not an easy job. Shame there are a few bad ones out there that tarnish the image of the profession in the eyes of some.

There have been a couple of threads on here that were pretty cut and dry (from a Police Officer's point of view), where the locals have bashed the officer. I guess, I just have come to expect it now.

The difference in performance between the 9mm and 40 cal are not nearly as big as most think. In modern expanding ammunition, the slightly more powerful 40 cal is not worth the added recoil, in my opinion. And to boot, some of the 9mm+p have more ft lbs of energy than most 40 cal loads. Shot placement is by far the biggest factor on stopping any aggressor. Thus when all things considered the potential benefit of the 40 cal is outweighed by the 9mms ability to hold more rounds and having less recoil.(To aid in better follow up shots) For example CorBon 9mm+p 115 gr jhp= 434ft lbs. Winchester 40sw 180gr jhp= 408ft lbs. Now there are loads out there such as CorBons 40sw 135gr jhp that get in the area of 480ft lbs. But they are some what rare. This is not a dig at Winchester ammunition either, just an example of the 40sw offering in general.

Any idea why the idiot pulled a gun on the trooper....? Even with his kids in the car......

Trooper was a true professional.... And yes, cops go to work everyday knowing this could be them....

Besides the dash and taser cams, the day is approaching that cops will be outfitted with goggle cams. Another layer of protection for both cops and citizens seems to called for these days. Some issues have to be worked out, such as when are they activated, and the monitoring apparatus at HQ

I agree 100%. Shoot placement is key. However in real world incidents a person shooting skills drop by 50%. So shot placement is out the window.

True. That adrenaline dump combined with tunnel vision make marksmanship go down the crapper. That was the issue I had in the Zimmerman case.

I don't see how anyone could find fault here. He didn't open up or escalate beyond reasonable instruction even when the guy had popped out of his car. Sure the officer risked his life, but he did the right things at the right time in the right order.
