I noticed you are from Oildale. Have you seen that new Korn video titled Oildale after your town? Is it really as bad as they make it out to be?

warning!
LONG POST BELOW

I have not seen the video but I doubt that Korn could make it seem worse than it is in times and places. I cant really explain it in ten words or less so here goes.

Theres no denying it. Oildale is a rough lil part of the world with some very bad people in it. More than its fair share of home grown monsters of every stripe. It quite literally is the nearlt undiluted fruits of the people John Steinbeck wrote about in his book The Grapes of Wrath. We are the sons and daughters and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of dirt poor people displaced in the great depression and concurrent drought from Oklahoma Arkansas and Missouri mostly. They came here by the tens of thousands with their families competing for a tenth that many good oilfield jobs and a quarter that many jobs in agriculture picking fruit nuts and cotton. Desperate people have desperate ways and poor folks have poor ways. Most of the folks here now either never made it out or came here because its inexpensive and they cant afford better. Started off poor white and now is maybe 25% 1st generation workers out of Mexico. The kids largely grew up like the parents, in a culture of hard work, fiscal failure, physical pain, bloody mindedness, not much acceptance from the community surrounding them (except when they wanted work done for less money than decent people would charge), and less respect for other peoples property than is right. The kind of folks that many still accuse Katrina refugees of being. It makes the gems that also live here, and the occasional really good thing that happens here more amazing. Famous 08ers who've lived here would be (not Korn, they are bakersfield and Greenfield) Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Rick Roger and Casey Mears, sort of Frank Gifford, Gerald Haslam, Kevin Harvick, and a few more.

Korns lyrics dont say much in particular about Oildale. Just a song with bad attitude with Oildale in the title. Id say that Buck Owens streets of Bakersfield and some of Merle Haggards works (mama tried for example) better describe Oildale. If that aint country by David Allen Coe could almost have been written by my dad. He busted out of that mold after I left school and eventually wore suits and glad handed folks for decent money accross the Eastern US and Canada. Ileft and did alright before I came back. A lot of folks never find any way to make it out of here or play by outside rules. Some by luck and some by choice.

Again it isnt all bad here, and there are some wonderful things that are not found elsewhere. But there are undeniably some cultural differences that are not simply different, they are worse for being different. You take the good and stay away from the bad and it is OK.

Looks like it was filmed in Oildale and on the old Getty oil lease.

I could find scenes and people just like that within spitting distancfe of my house, in fact the house with the two pit bulls in the yard looks just like my house, cept my fence is shorter. I easily could find a sexual predator two men who have murdered someone and 10 alcoholics or drug addicts and twenty thieves within a short mile if I was looking. I could also find beauty so great and stories so wonderful in that distance that they could bring tears to anyone whose heart had not been hardened by years of abuse.
