Many here expressed thoughts that it best that the Saints not make the playoffs and take a beatdown. On the other hand, it seems that the Saints were playing their best at the end of the year and could have caught the Eagles just like the Bucs did. On that we'll never know.
The bigger question is what the fallout would have been had the Saints, led by Carr and D.A. would have been had they hosted a home playoff game and faltered as did the Cowboys led by Dak and McCarthy.
Starting with the Saints. It would have been brutal here and throughout Saints Nation. D.A. most likely would have been fired as it would have been his defense that looked like Swiss cheese all game long. Stuck with Carr for the 2024 season the gloom and doom would have been present all year long unless he got the Saints to the Superbowl. PC would have been fired as well as the entire coaching staff. Cleaning house would have been the call from all Who Dats.
Now with the Cowboys. I don't put it on McCarthy. His record speaks for itself. It's slightly better than Paytons record overall. MM didn't step on the field and let the lights shine to bright by making errant throws, interceptions and pick sixes. That honor goes to Dak Prescott. Funny that in post game interviews the media questions centered around whether or not a change needed to be made at Head Coach, to which Dak took up for MM by saying if that's the case you need to point the finger towards me. That was the most accurate thing from Dak all day. Yes Indeed! The spotlight should have been on Dak more than anyone else in the Cowboys organization. Regular season Dak hasn't transitioned to playoff Dak. After 8 years Dak has proven that he fails to perform well enough in the playoffs for Dallas to advance to the big game. Let's look at his stats in the Green Bay loss.
On the surface if you were just looking at his full game stats you would think he played OK. He put up more passing yards than any other QB in the 1st round of playoff games. His stat line reads 41 of 60, 3 TDs, 2 Ints., 403 Yards, 89.9 QB Rating. Most of his success and positive stats came with the game out of reach with less than 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. The Packers had a 48-16 lead and were playing all backups on defense at that point enjoying a 32 point lead while just trying to close out the game without any significant injuries. They were just running the ball with 2nd teamers trying to kill clock at that point. That's when Dak put up most of his garbage time numbers.
Back up to the first half. The Packers held a 27-0 lead. On the last drive of the first half the Cowboys benefited from a bs personal foul call on a horse collar that wasn't and then scored with 2 seconds left in the half on a play that their left guard should have been called for a false start which would have ended the half without Dallas scoring. Dak was credited with a TD pass that should not have counted. Even so, his first half stats were 13 of 21 for 87 Yards, 1 TD, 2 Ints. including a Pick 6, and a QB rating of less than 30, IIRC.
Like the Saints, the Boyz are stuck with Dak for at least one more year. Like the Saints, the Cowpokes have decided to keep their respective Head Coaches in place for at least one more year.
The differences at QB are not that dramatic. Dak puts up better overall numbers than Carr and wins more regular season games but neither have been effective in the post season.
The differences at Head Coach are night and day. McCarthy is a proven winner with a Superbowl win, multiple playoff wins and division championships while D.A. is a proven loser with nothing similar to show as positives.
Thankfully it wasn't the Saints on the other end of the beatdown. As much as I would always prefer the Saints to make the playoffs, the gloom and doom that would linger for 9 months would have been almost to much to take.
Any thoughts?
