Hey all, I'm in an interactive Offseason league, where I've landed as the Saints GM. I need some advice as I've in a sort of sticky situation right now, and I'd love some inputs from the guys who know this team best. So far I've done the following things:
Free Agent Signings
OLB Lance Briggs: I was determined to get either Asante Samuel or Lance Briggs in the offseason. The bids for Samuel went through the roof, so I "settled" for signing Lance Briggs instead. He took up a big chunk of my cap space though, and cost me some of the other free agents I wanted.
OLB Boss Bailey: A speedy, athletic guy signed to give some depth and be a special teams contributor. I chose not to tender Matt McCoy, but I figure Bailey will be a decent replacement.
MLB Dan Morgan: A playmaker who has major injury concerns. I traded for Jonathan Vilma (I've listed my trades lower down), so Morgan will be his insurance policy. Only thing is, neither Vilma nor Morgan are the most durable of guys, but provided they stay healthy this could give the Saints the best pair of MLBs in the league.
DT Brian Young: A very solid player I was able to resign for cheap.
WR Devery Henderson: Same as above. Provides an explosive aspect to the Saints offense with his blazing speed.
WR/KR Jerome Mathis: The Saints need a Kick Returner, and Mathis provides that at a very cheap price. He was a Pro Bowl Returner in his rookie year.
CB Aaron Glenn: A former Pro Bowl Corner who serves as a temporary fit to stop the bleeding at the position. He still has a few good years of service left in him, and could tutor any new, young CBs brought in.
SS Mike Doss: A solid player that provides depth and could compete for a starting spot.
OG Jacob Bell: One of the more underrated free agents, Bell came at a very cheap price and could instantly compete for a starting position. Rated a 4 star free agent by WalterFootball behind only Alan Faneca.
DE Mike Rucker: Yeah he's old and is nearing the end of his game, but he could fit into the DLine rotation and provide solid production when fresh and going against tired offenses.
I also pursued Randall Gay, Gibril Wilson, Bernard Berrian and Rod Coleman, but did not have the cap space necessary to sign them.
Trades
DE Charles Grant for MLB Jonathan Vilma: Yeah, yeah, I know you guys got him for dirt in real life. But I swung this trade before the real life trade happened and let's face it, what you guys pulled on the Jets was straight up highway robbery. I didn't get so lucky. But this trade gives the Saints possibly the best Linebacking corps in the NFL: Scott Fujita, Jonathan Vilma, Lance Briggs. That is mean.
#10 overall for #32, #57, DE Matt Roth: After trading away Charles Grant, I needed a DE and found a young one in Roth. A guy with a high motor, he was a mid second round pick a few years ago who was a pretty good prospect but has not had significant playing time. Unproven, but could potentially develop into a solid starter.
For the draft picks, I felt that there were no huge impact players available at 10. The first few picks in the draft went like this: DE Chris Long, DE Vernon Gholston, DT Sedrick Ellis, OT Jake Long, CB Domique Rodgers-Cromartie, RB Darren McFadden, DT Glenn Dorsey. After seeing all the elite players go, I felt that the skill differential between the mid first round and high second round would not be huge. I would have taken CB Leodis McKelvin had I stayed at the 10th pick, but I don't think he's THAT much better than other CB prospects such as Mike Jenkins or Aqib Talib, so I was willing to wait. In a draft loaded with depth, but without much elite talent, I felt it was best to trade down.
Well, my original plan was to see either Leodis McKelvin or Kenny Phillips fall to the 20s and trade back up to nab one of them. However, both have gone in the top 15. One option would be for me to trade the #32 and #78 to acquire CB DeAngelo Hall from the Atlanta Falcons. What do you guys think of him? Would it be worth it? Or should I stay pat and hope one of the other first round CBs falls to me? Should I trade up? I'm in a bit of a pickle here. Any input would be great, thanks guys!
