Is Drew Brees' number " Officially retired" by the team ???......... (2 Viewers)

I could see #9 just not being used anymore and Brees name goes on the ring of honor. Do teams even retire numbers now?

Saw that Patriots were going to honor Tom Brady and I am trying to remember if the Saints did something similar the year after Brees left ( old man brain here) .

Anyway, have the Saints officially retired his jersey yet or is there a certain timeline they go by before doing that or putting him in the Ring of Honor ? If not , was wondering why the wait ??
It's not going to be retired. The only question is if the equipment manager is going to issue that jersey to a player.

It's been 40+ years since #8 has been issued, and that was to Archie Manning. Not issuing a jersey effectively, but not officially, retires it.

I doubt #9 will be issued to anyone anytime soon.

I too think it's a damn shame that anyone since City Champ and Big Willie got to wear #57 and #77. I thin TH7 has done the #7 jersey proud.

SFIAH

#9 should be the only number retired. Period.

People won’t like it, but no one has achieved what he has on the field for this team or more importantly, done more for this region off the field than that man. And that’s not an opinion, that’s a fact.

Additionally as it stands, when inducted in 2026, Brees will also be the only first ballot Hall-of-Famer the franchise has.

Yep.

I don't think any number needs to be retired. If all the numbers 0 - 99 are retired, then what will you have left to put on a players jersey, besides their name? Nothing. Just honor that player with that particular number in the rafters and be done with it.

I never understood why they retired Atkins and Taylor. They are HOFers, but they spent less than four seasons with the franchise.
Atkins was still a force during his 3 seasons with the Saints. I agree though. His HOF career was based mostly on
his time as a Bear.

I’m really not in favor of retiring numbers.
I like what the Cowboys have done with 88. There are a few Cowboys that lay claim to it.
But I like the idea of honoring Brees in the rafters.

I don’t know what the policy on un retiring numbers, but it is out of place now that the Saints have a history with players that have spent the majority with the franchise.
