Is this Marcus Maye final year ? (1 Viewer)

Probably. While the $8.5 mil in dead money will sting, cutting him still saves $1.5 mil on the cap. With him having just gone to IR, he may have played his last snaps as a Saint.

This is probably Maye’s final year as a starter. We have the safety depth to move on but it’d make more sense cap wise to let him play out his final contract year in 2024 as reliable depth.

We want to avoid piling up high dead cap. Maye would be a post-June 1 cut, probably during preseason cuts if he’s released.

His dead cap is 8.5M before June 1 vs. 2.4M post June 1. 8.5M dead cap is deducted from available cap space if he’s released before June.

A March restructure for cap room eliminates the possibility of cutting him altogether.

He has non-guaranteed base of $7mil plus a $500k roster bonus and $2.4 mil in prorated signing bonus. That brings him to around a $10mil cap number. We can move off of him for just the signing bonus dead money and save $1.5 mil on the cap and just go with Howden. He misses too many game to restructure him to keep him here. Especially since his contract voids in 2025 anyway.

It’s amazing how well they’ve drafted safeties yet here we are today debating safeties.
These aren't drafted players these are skillset replacements that have not proven to have the skills but not ability of the players they are replacing, players the Saints scouted and drafted.

My point is that the Saints have done well drafting safeties and wouldn’t be in this position if they had just kept the talent that they drafted.

His contract is not guaranteed anymore because of his suspension.

His signing bonus is and has already been paid to him, it's just spread across a bunch of years for cap purposes. If he were to be cut or traded, that it gets moved up to the current year. Regardless, to keep him it'll cost around $10 mil with no restructure, to cut him will leave $8.5 in dead money and $1.5 in cap savings.

Good to know!

They are very certainly planning on letting him go when the season ends and looked into trading him before the season started. A very bad whiff of a signing in trying to replace Marcus Williams rather than just keeping him for $1M more.

Maye is one of the contracts you probably need to restructure if you have any intention of not restructuring Carr (to maintain the 2025 out on his contract).
