I guess Moses was burning a little bush.
When you read further it states they see God descending on the mountain in fire, smoke billowing up covering the sky, and the entire mountain shaking and trembling. I find mass hallucination to that extent hard to believe.

Sounds like a uneducated description of a volcano to me. Mountain on fire...check, smoke..check, shaking mountain and ground...check. They dont have to be on drugs...only witnessing a volcanic eruption. Of course the reasonable assumption of a volcanic eruption is fantastic compared to a diety caused event or a drug induced mass hallucination.

Or, if you prefer:
"The modern world will accept no dogmas upon any authority; but it will accept any dogmas on no authority. Say that a thing is so, according to the Pope or the Bible, and it will be dismissed as a superstition without examination.
But preface your remark merely with "they say" or "don't you know that?" or try (and fail) to remember the name of some professor mentioned in some newspaper; and the keen rationalism of the modern mind will accept every word you say."--G.K. Chesterton
Well, yeah. Because we've already fairly well established that these are superstitions. (And the other is grand poobah of a particular brand of superstition.)
By all means, please prove that Moses did not have conversations with God. Show me the formula used by whomever did this that proved Moses did not speak with God.

There is no God. Ergo, Moses was talking to himself. QED
