IYHO - Is Herbie the Love Bug a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie? (4 Viewers)

I would call it fantasy, but not science fiction. There isn't any mention of science being involved in Herbie being sentient. I'd say it's more implied that it "magically or miraculously happened." Therefore, I'd classify it as fantasy.
If there's not even a vague hand-waving science explanation, then we can't just assume one. Could just as easily assume a wizard did it. Or that he's possessed by the ghost of Ferdinand Porsche.

So I'd say if there's no science, it's fantasy.

It's not like it's Short Circuit.

Or Bumblebee.

It certainly has a fantastical element to it but I wouldn't go so far as to call it fantasy or sci fi

Ronald Reagan was president the last time I saw it, did they ever explain what the deal with Herbie was?

Science experiment? possessed by a ghost? Sentient alien?

I googled it, and according to Wikipedia, well...

"Hank Cooper (Bruce Campbell) becomes the owner of Herbie in The Love Bug, the 1997 made-for-television movie. In it, it's revealed Herbie was created by a German engineer named Dr. Gustav Stumpfel. As he was building Herbie a picture of Dr. Stumpfel's wife fell into a vat of molten metal, giving Herbie life."

Ummm.

Original film or nothing.

Sci Fi would just be a sub genere, but it does have the elements.
Its like Die Hard, people want it to be a Christamas movie, but its just a movie that takes place on Christmas,.,
( yes, i do understand i am taking my life in my own hands by saying this)

But what if Herby the Love Bug, went down a dark spiral and became Christine?
