JD's top 10 plays in Saints history. (1 Viewer)

I would think that Morten's New Year's Eve kick against the Rams to put the Saints into the playoffs should be in there. At least it was high for me:

1990: Despite struggling all season and entering the final game of the season with a 7-8 record the Saints had a shot to make the playoffs with a win in the final game of the season on a Monday Night game on New Years Eve at the Superdome against the Rams. With the score tied at 17 Morten Andersen kicked a game winning Field Goal with two seconds left to even the Saints record at 8-8, and earn the Saints the newly established sixth Playoff spot in the NFC. The Saints would go on to lose 16-6 to the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card round at Solider Field.

I just followed the link to the youtube video of this, and believe it or not it was the first time I ever saw the footage of this. I was serving in Operation Desert Shield at the time and listened to it on the Armed Forces Radio network from the Saudi Arabian desert at like 2 in the morning, but I had never seen it.

Wow, very cool. I remember that game well. Me and a friend (who was also a Saints fan) were watching that game with our girlfriends at my brother's house (who was gone for the week). The plans were to immediately leave as soon as the game was over and hit a club somewhere to celebrate the New Year. The girls who of course could care less about the game were terrified that it would go into overtime. I don't really recall now whether we made it to the club in time but man what an ending.

Then it doesn't belong on the list.
I disagree. Just because it was a long time ago doesn't make it any less significant. Even if it was just the first play in Saints history it would qualify but the fact that it was first play and it was a 94 yard touchdown on the first ever play in Saints history makes it ridiculous to even consider leaving off the list.

Probably because the Payton Era is by far the most successful in Saints history.

Pre-Payton - 7 winning seasons, 13 non-losing seasons, 0 playoff wins, 0 NFCC appearances, 0 SB appearances in 38 years
With Payton - 2 (about to be 3) winning seasons, 4 non-losing seasons, 4 playoff wins, 2 NFCC appearances, 1 NFCC win, 1 SB appearance, 1 SB win in 4.5 years

Better football leads to more memorable and great plays.

"Hakim dropped the ball" happened under Haslett.

Hartley's kick versus Tracey's pick of Farve-

IMHO there is no comparison, the kick is bigger by several factors. As great as the pick was (and certainly it should be a top 10 as well) it is always overstated... If Porter had outright dropped that ball or it would have otherwise been incompleted what would we had been looking at? A 55 or 56 yard attempt by Longwell... Now it's been a long time since Ive seen a breakdown but at one point NFL kickers historically made less than 20% of kicks attempted over 55 yards. The net effect would have likely been the same situation that played out. The true benefit to the Saints was really the penalty or the decision by Farve to throw in the first place.. Even if he runs there the Vikes would likely only have picked up 4-5 yards and been faced with a low percentage FG.

Hartley's kick was a culminating play that launched the New Orleans Saints into the Super Bowl. The collective heart, mind, soul, and spirit of a city, a region, a culture, and generations of long-suffering yet devout fanatics ebbed and flowed between two polar opposites (the most disappointing end to the most promising season of a franchise or the exaltation of going to the MF'ing Super Bowl!) in the 60 seconds or so between the timeout, reset, snap, hold, and kick. Some of the videos that show full bars and restaurants exploding at the moment that ball's inevitable arc was able to be determined are masterpieces for all time to the sport and region.

It's solidly number 2. There's no touching number 1, which should not only be considered the greatest play in Saints history but one of the top few in the history of the Super Bowl and very high in the absolute greatest in NFL history.

It doesn't matter whether historically kicks beyond 55 yards are made 20% of the time or not if Longwell was one of the 20%ers. Porter made sure that didn't happen.

I don't think it should be left off of the list b/c of its age. The poster to whom I replied stated that "you had to be there" to appreciate the significance of that play and that's why I think it ought to be left off of the list. If you have to have seen it to appreciate its significance, then it can't have been too significant. The Saints didn't even win that game. The return for a touchdown is interesting, to be sure. It is not, IMO, significant enough to be listed among the top-10 plays in all of Saints history.

does anyone have vid of dueces ramble in the end zone that was on the list

Here's a view shot by a fan...

Ohhhh wow! So that's what JD meant by "Deuce's Dozer". I never clicked the link to the article, and assumed "Deuce's Dozer" was the time he BULLED over Keion Carpenter in that Falcons games back in 2002 (?). Trying to find a youtube video of that, but so far unsuccessful.

Woah! I just realized that this game here was the first Saints game I ever went to. If I'd known then who historic the game was I might have tried harder to not fall asleep.

Fascinating thread. Fascinating reading.

Not much discussion about number 1, though. I've probably watched that play 150, maybe 200 times (maybe even more) since February, and I get chills EVERY SINGLE TIME. Real, no kidding chills. Sometimes I get a little teary-eyed.

I don't care if Tracy Porter rips a mask off his head one day, revealing himself to be Osama Bin Laden, and states that he is detonating a massive hydrogen bomb that will explode planet earth within 10 minutes. I would take that 10 minutes to seek him out and buy him a beer.

I'm exaggerating. Maybe.
