The man didn't hate anybody he hated what he considered a sin and yes you can seperate the two. God's word says to love the person but hate the sin.

Fred Phelps on the other hand is an idiot he actually hates the person.

SBTB, it just the guy died today. You know I disagreed with much that he said, but at what point do we take the high road and realize that there are people (family) in pain right now?

The news of Falwell's death probably causes lots of families to revisit the pain he caused them over the course of their lives, with his words and deeds. That people's emotions are raw is not unexpected, nor is it unforgivable.

You don't see a difference between one comment Jessie made in 1984 and apologized profusely for and Falwell saying that stuff over and over and over?

If it was simply one comment, then yes, I'd see a big difference. But it's not just one comment: http://archive.salon.com/politics/feature/2000/08/16/jackson/index.html

I'm not going to get into defending someone I don't like.

...snipped...

The two really shouldn't be part of the same conversation because they really have little to nothing in common. As LSSpam point out Farrakhan (who's pretty much universally despised outside his flock) is a much better comparison.

Last thing I want is for any casual observer (coughTPScough) to get the impression from this thread that you or I are here to defend a JJ or a JF (or anyone of their ilk). It's a discussion of ideas, and people should be smart enough to separate that from the surface topic of the death of a demagogue. If they aren't, then they shouldn't be too upset when I laugh at them. :)

I'd agree that Farrakhan is a better comparison. Interestingly enough, though, he ties in quite nicely (with thinly-veiled threats...yay!) with the Hymietown episode: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/frenzy/jackson.htm

And finally...Larry Flynt weighs in on Falwell's death:

"The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle – the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.

My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in."

Everybody's got to die sometime...
sucks to be him.

At worse, I discovered complaints that Falwell condemned homosexuality as sin.

Really? Cuz I did a Google search for "Jerry Falwell homosexuality," and the first link it brought up was a Falwell quote page. If you'd read the whole thread instead of stopping on page 1 or 2 like you said earlier, you'd see where I copied some of the quotes. I'll reproduce them for you here.

“AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”

“Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.”

(About the 9/11 attacks) "...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."

“[homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.”

Now try replacing "homosexuals" with "black people" or "Jews" in the above quotations, and tell me what the reaction to his demise would be. "Jews are brute beasts," "Interracial marriage is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family," "AIDS is God's punishment upon black people." Would people on here be chiding some of us for cheering his death? Why is it that gay people are the only group that it's defensible to bash? Those of you who say, "Well, he said some bad things about gay people, and I wouldn't condone that, but look at all the good stuff he did," crack me up even more. Would you give the same leeway to David Duke? I'm sure he's done his share of good stuff. What about the Nazis? They did lots of good stuff for Germany, after all, up until the war. I know those aren't perfect examples, but I'm using them merely as examples of rotten people who have probably done some good at some point in their lives.

I find it amusing, jim, that you say that Falwell's later decision to meet with Mel White and other gay Christians was criticized by others in the fundamentalist movement, but the only example you give is Fred Phelps. Are you really saying that Falwell must not have been so bad because Phelps criticized him for losing his convictions? I think it's more significant that Phelps applauded Falwell for once teaching "Biblical" views on homosexuality, before criticizing him for meeting with White. When Phelps applauds you for teaching the Bible, it's time to take serious stock of what you have been saying.

As I have stated over and over on this thread for those who care to read it, Falwell did a hell of a lot more than just say homosexuality is a sin, as the quotes above abundantly demonstrate. I didn't hate him - I really don't hate anyone - but I was quite pleased to find out we wouldn't have to deal with him anymore.

There will probably be people cheering when you are gone too.

Precisely. People like Falwell. You really don't get it, do you? I wouldn't have anything against people like Falwell if they didn't insist on blaming me as a gay man for the problems of this country, claim that God sends deadly diseases to punish people like me, and claim that heaven will rejoice when all the people like me are gone. He and his ilk started all this with their hatred, bigotry, and utter stupidity, and I'll be damned if I'm going to sign onto this site and talk about all the good stuff that bigoted, morbidly obese, intolerant, lying, corrupt, thieving, racist, sack of crap excuse for a human being did.

I'll let those of you who agree with him do that.

Being an NBC employee...

Boy, NBC really blew it yesterday on Falwell's death.

Some moron quoted the viral, loony-left political website whitehouse.org instead of the correct government website whitehouse.gov. :hihi:

Yeah, WhiteHouse.org. The most infamous, relentlessly anti-Bush parody site on the ‘Net.
You can imagine how it played out.

Producer to intern: “We need a fawning description of him from the White House website to show how influential he was with conservatives.” Intern to producer: “Great! I’ll just google white house falwell…”

Have a look at what, in their haste, they evidently thought was an official White House webpage. Sample quote:

"I was enjoying breakfast in my kitchen, righteously poring over my daily foot-high stack of mostly gay hardcore pornography so that I might issue informed denunciations to my flock. I had just paused to admire the contours of my third helping of some especially handsome kielbasa, when suddenly there was that awful parody staring at me from the pages of Hustler!"

And yet, when they realized what they’d done, they couldn’t admit their mistake.

+1 etc

Name one person Fallwell ever killed. Theres nothing wrong with intolerance. some people are blessed with plenty of it, and some people don't have enough.

So people are OK as long as they don't kill anyone? Apparently there's no problem with being racist and bigoted, so long as you don't kill anyone. Is David Duke OK in your book too since he hasn't killed any black people, Jews, or immigrants (that we know of)?

You know, it may not be a perfect comparison, but Hitler never flipped the switch for the gas chambers, never lined up a row of Jews and shot them into a trench. He didn't kill anyone. But his orders resulted in several million people getting killed. I'd never compare Falwell's rhetoric to what Hitler said, or would I claim that he's had anywhere near that kind of effect, but one wonders how many people felt empowered to deny a gay person or black person their civil rights, or to go out and beat up some gay kid in their school, because of the things Jerry Falwell said.

I'll admit, there is a small part of me that hopes his death means that people will stop associating Christianity with Jerry Falwell. But this thread is pretty disgusting. The more you guys try to justify it, the more obvious it becomes that you realize deep down you're wrong. It's all about attention-grabbing.

I'm still waiting for a statement from this guy...

Much easier just to call other people's views disgusting and claim that it's all about attention-grabbing than to actually address anything they said, isn't it?
