personally, the way this younger generation is going, no only should women be included, but we should just re-institute the draft and force everyone to do 3 years of military service. Make some real men and women out of all these 20 year old children.

Which is why I’m all for it. If going to war, putting young people in that situation with the immediate and life long issues that are there is that important, then I guess females should go also. Now, what it would do is hopefully give a second of pause to say and reflect and say is it truly worth it? Is whatever war the politicians want worth it to send your daughters.

Of course I’d be more in favor if there were no exceptions, and children of millionaires and politicians were chosen first.

i would actually argue that women have a bit more insight into this than most men
perhaps not the very specific violence that you seem to mean, but all other forms of 'sickness' sure

There's,a heck of a lot more to the Selective Service laws than just the Draft.

Pilots, doctors, nurses, ships captains, air traffic controllers and many other licensed professions carry a Selective Service designation.

If you have one of those licenses and Uncle Sam needs you . . . POOF! . . . Congrats, you are an Army captain, go to war or go to jail.

M.A.S.H. was based on civilian doctors being put in uniform and shipped to Korea with little or no warning.

I'm pretty sure the need for those support staff, was because you had this rapid expansion of grunts from the draft. Could be wrong about that.

The US military has switched to a smaller, high tech, high mobility, professional force particularly since the end of the Cold War. I can't ever forsee us going back to the good ole days of throwing Johnny into the front lines with a rifle after 6 weeks of basic anytime soon.

For South Korea this was particularly important because they wanted a large reserve that already had at least some training, in case of invasion by the North.

The bargain is that college is free, however. (At least in Europe)

This could be where we are headed with Bernie Sanders plan.

If you were to make it where in order to get college for no charge by doing something in service to the country for 1 year, I'd be all for that.

I've done exercises with the South Korean military. With the exception of a few units, most don't care one bit. But, like you said, they don't necessarily have to do military service.

i was think more someone grandfather aged with stupid student loans who might be available for 2 years of paper shuffling - or maybe the USO wants to expand to some experimental theatre and needs a collaborator - and then poof no more loans

Well, you'd have to go back to everyone born from 1970 and on. Because, around 1988-1990 is when the active duty numbered dropped a ton.

So, you might want to get off your own lawn.
