Looking to get my first lap top. I've always had desk tops but now I want to move into the 21st century with a decent laptop that WILL NOT be used for gaming, but would like to stream "Movies" and do my taxes, check email, look at S.R. etc. I don't want to break the bank but am willing to spend $400 - $500; is there something that will fill that bill or do I need to think more $$$ to get speed and memory etc. It sounds crazy but I really would like a back lit key board. Thanks for your help with this

At that price I would not have a specific model in mind. But you can sometimes find a really good bargain, if you are willing to consider open box items. If you have a Bestbuy nearby, certain stores resell open box laptops. These are usually very limited supply (maybe 1 model in the store).

Sometimes bestbuy does sell open box online, but due to the limited quantity, seems most of what is available depends on the specific store you are looking at. My own personal experience: I found an open box laptop that normally cost $1200 for $330. It had 177 hours on it, but looked brand new. I didn't come in a retail box, but for the price I paid, am very happy with it.

If you want to look into this, here is my suggestion:
step 1 would be to select your closest bestbuy location.
step 2, I would suggest selecting these 2 options and seeing what pops up in the results. I'd say these days don't consider anything less than 16Gb ram.

I found a couple you might be interested in.

$330 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo...sd-storage-abyss-blue/6588662.p?skuId=6588662

$450 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1811273-REG/lenovo_83fw0007us_16_ideapad_slim_5.html

The one from B&H has a slightly larger and more vertical display, so it will be better for reading forums/documents and work/tasks. Downside is due to it being more vertical, you will have some black bars on the top and bottom when viewing movies and video content. But it might be an acceptable tradeoff

Thank You very much for the recs....If did the B&H would it be worth it to get the Microsoft 365 for the extra $70 or is there something else to use

Not in my opinion, because office 365 is a yearly subscription that you pay.
You can get a standalone lifetime key for $35 through a 3rd party https://www.groupon.com/deals/office-2024-standard-lifetime-windows

Also, it appears that the laptop above from Best Buy went up in price, but I found another one with the same type of display as the model from B&H
