LB Willie Gay to the Saints on 1-year deal (Merged) (1 Viewer)

That's what I was thinking. I wonder if the team feels that Werner hasn't been good enough and this is either a wake up call or a sign that they will move on from him next year if Gay earns a longer contract?

Of course, it would also make it a lot easier to move Werner to MLB if Davis gets hurt or needs to be subbed over the next two years of his contract.

Werner for some reason looked SLOW last year, always a step behind on his angles and slower to react.

I hope he gets back whatever he had before last year, but something just seemed off with him in ‘23. He may be one of the many guys that for one reason or another, peaks early and ages beyond his years. Maybe it’s the injuries.

He has the speed and experience to help us stop these mobile quarterbacks that have been running on us, as well as the immobile quarterbacks that have been running on us.

You said it -- definitely a "get younger and faster" signing to help with the yearly scramble issue. Seems to also be a bargain deal as well for a fun spark plug type dude. I dig it!

I seem to remember DA saying either in Werner's first or second season that he views him as a player who can lead the defense in the MLB spot, so it stands to reason that they bring in his replacement for the '25 season when Werner moves over to Mike. Could turn out to be a really great move if it pans out.

Scratch one potential comp pick off the board. That said, we probably need a LB now more than we need a 6th/7th rounder next year.
Gay will be good competition for Werner and a potential familiar re-sign in a year should he ball out and we let Werner walk.

Both graded out below average but the Chiefs aren’t a linebacker factory either. He may have some untapped potential that our LB coach can squeeze out

Other than that he’s quality depth from a SB roster. It won’t hurt

Some info on his departure from KC here. Apparently Sportrac thought he would get 4 years, $28 million. Sounds like a young ascending player who was a part time player at KC that KC just couldn't afford to keep.
