I’ll be blunt: New Orleans Saints rookie Marcus Davenport missing practice after exiting Monday’s session (players had Tuesday off) is not good. But that’s exactly what happened Wednesday as reported by Mike Triplett of ESPN, who explained that Davenport was present but did not participate in the session open to media. Additionally, tight end Benjamin Watson was not present after walking out of Monday’s training camp practice.
Whatever injury Davenport experienced Monday still hasn’t been announced, and likely won’t be unless it turns severe enough to land him on the Injured Reserve list. So in a way it’s a good sign that we don’t much more.
That’s about the extent of the good. Every day of practice Davenport misses is an opportunity lost. The raw areas of his game have been written about at length all over the web this offseason; now priorities shift to getting his reps against top-flight blockers like Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk.
