Metal Gear Solid 4 now reservable! (1 Viewer)

has there ever been a real reason to reserve a game??? other than a sales tactic to get people in the store??

Preordering and gift cards are two ways for companies to make a substantial amount of dough on interest and investments off of YOUR money. Flip side, though, is that you holding onto your own dough isn't likely to make you a whole lot, so I usually preorder something if I know it's something I really want. But I pay in full up front. That way, I walk in, show them my receipt, and walk out with the game.

Most games like RPGs and the like, though, I usually don't purchase right away. You can wait 6 months to a year on games and get them for half price, which is worth a great deal when games are running 60 bucks a pop nowadays.

The game that I bought my PS3 for....FINALLY!! I hope that date holds up!

honestly, i was never a fan of the meta gear series.....i always preferred splinter cell.....

this looks like the one to change my mind about metal gear......

i heard the new splinter cell was a 360 exclusive.....can anyone confirm this??

if so, i might consider a 360

Well, yes there are many reasons, but I guess it depends on the type of person you are. I'll tell you that the people that tried in vain to find COD4 for the 360, or Rock Band for the 360 or PS2, or Guitar Hero 3 on any platform after the first day when just about every retailer had sold out within minutes had wished they put down their $5 deposit.

You didn't have to ask any of the hundreds of people at my Halo 3 or WoW: BC midnight launches if they thought it was worth it. They were there in the middle of the freakin' night and were plenty happy that their $5 guaranteed them a copy of the game they had been waiting for.

I wonder if any of the people that offered me thousands of dollars in bribes for a Wii console wished they could go back in time and put down their $25 and not have to deal with having to find one the hard way.

People that want lower profile titles make sure to reserve games. I have a lady that comes in and reserves every single Nancy Drew PC game as soon as its announced. Why? Because she knows that most stores will likely only get a few copies of such an obscure title, if they get them at all.

People that reserved Kane & Lynch for the PS3 got a surprise $5 off their game when they came to pick it up (no, not their deposit back, an additional $5). I'm sure they were happy about their choice to reserve the game.

Yeah, for a good number of titles you don't have to reserve a copy to assure yourself the game on launch day. Madden is a good example. I will likely reserve 600+ copies, but they will send me over 2,000.

Yes, there's always "that guy" that can walk into any store, at any time, and find whatever game he's looking for. He's the guy that strolled into Wal-Mart without a care in the world and picked up his Rock Band and wondered what all the fuss was about. That's the same guy that's going to throw a fit when he can't find a copy of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed when he wants it because the thinks retailers that ask him if he wants to reserve a game are trying to rip him off somehow.

Also, the focus on reservations isn't motivated by making interest on the deposits. Everyone benefits from reservations. The publishers can gauge market interest, determining allocations, marketing budgets, and leveraging pre-sale figures into numerous business opportunities. The stores use reservations to determine market interest and allocations, and of course, when the game comes out, they know that customer is coming to their store to buy it, ensuring sales growth. Finally, the customer has the peace of mind that they can pick up their game on their own terms and not fight crowds or empty shelves if they don't want to. They also get the benefit of a phone call to remind them when the game comes in so they don't have to keep track of what game is launching when.

Let's not even get into pre-order bonuses like beta keys, and other cool goodies (sometimes even cash), that are frequently offered to reservation customers. I honestly could go on for a full page.

So, did I answer your question, or were you just trolling?

i would never buy a system for exclusive games...the whole idea just seems silly.....there are awesome games for both systems.....

lol

why would i be trolling about something like that??? it was an honest question.....look, i love video games, but i would just wait a week after the release and go buy it.....i don't feel compelled to be the first kid on the block with the new game

and i was being facetious about buying a 360 just for splinter cell.....i have already planned to get a 360 in a year or so anyway....if splinter cell is a 360 exclusive, it would just be another reason to buy it

What? I'm sorry, I don't think I understood this. Can you repeat it?

People just do it to make sure they will have thiers, its only 5 bucks and some people like how the stores will open at midnight and you can get the game 9 hours before the people who didn't reserve it have a go at it. I personally don't reserve anything because the one time I did reserve a game (GTA 3) The shipment eneded up being late to that store but on the shelf everywhere else. I said to hell with it and just bought it from best buy, ended up never buying the copy I reserved from ebgames and wasting 5 bucks.

But I wanted that game that day, and was pretty stubborn about it. I normally do what you do and wait a week or so (or for a friend to buy it so I can play it for free and see if I like it before hand)

Yeah, that's why I say it depends on the type of person you are. Reservations are mainly intended for those that just have to have that game on release day. Those types of people are becoming more and more common as gaming gets bigger.

BTW, Madden '09 and NCAA '09 reservations open today, too :p
