Mike Ditka at 2-7 (1 Viewer)

Oh, what “could have been!”

Ditka was full of himself; demanded his own office, and had expectations sky high… only to fall flat.

Old School WhoDats remember the old “Iron Era” website in anticipation of good things to come from Iron Mike Ditka. :covri:

His giving away our entire draft to get Ricky Williams was the boneheaded move of the century!

:gosaints:

Ditka was playing with house money in NOLA.
He was already a legendary player in Chicago.
He was the winningest modern era Bears coach. And the only coach to bring Chicago a Super Bowl.
His legacy was already protected.

I was excited when Ditka came in. Ultimately it failed, but he did build a good Oline and the defense wasn't too bad. Just with no QB or WRs, it was doomed. And the Ricky Williams debacle, it just went south.

Think Ditka could have worked out if he had hired a competent OC and was more serious about the QB situation.

To tell you the truth, he probably gave up on Kerry Collins too quickly.
Fact is, many good coaches would have struggled to win with the talent level we had on those teams.

I remember Ditka and those weekly casino shows that he would do. I don’t blame the guy. The Saints were willing to entertain his sort of half way retired alreadyness….and we know the rest.

His problem at QB was not recognizing Delhomme was his best QB. It’s a good thing we got rid of him when we did because his next plan was going to be to bring in Jim Miller. After moving on we were quickly loaded at QB with Blake, Brooks, Delhomme, and Bulger.

He sucked the second time around. Plain and simple.

Sure did. My memory is a little hazey. I was like 16 at the time (was already a Saints junky back then) I think he tried to tap out in Carolina and Dom Capers wasn’t having none of it and flat out cut him. When we scored him I was convinced that was the guy. Once he got in he was so different than the Billy Joes and Wuerffel his arm was stronger the throws looked crisper but all I remember nowadays is the interceptions. Looking back on it now considering his issues with alcoholism playing in NOLA probably wasn’t the best thing for him personally plus we were just a bad football team. I just looked at his numbers too and wow that’s probably why I remember the interceptions. Man, people light Winston up for throwing picks Collins was other worldly when it came to interceptions, guess that’s why the picks stand out in my mind.

Since we dipping into the way back when machine another cool memory I had was with my cousin who was thinking about committing to ULL (USL back then) and I went with him on his visit in 1996. We got to watch Jake Delhomme’s Ragin Cajan’s beat Texas A&M from the sideline. Fans rushed the field after that was pretty cool.

I still was on team Brooks over Jake later in life.

The excitement when we hired ditka was next level.....only to be followed by next level disappointment. Wish he would've lived up to expectations

You can sum it up in one play the Browns Hail Mary on Halloween in the dome. The excitement of having a rare victory right there for the taking vs. a team that has never won ….. nope defeat.
