Fact is, many good coaches would have struggled to win with the talent level we had on those teams.
The talent level on those teams were because of Dikta. He thought that he could win with his "Garbaski" type players...

He was a terrible talent evaluator...and he was a bad coach who rode on Buddy Ryan's & Jim Finks coattails to stardom.

Yup, the version of Ditka we got was terrible, horrible.....and he wasn't ever going to change.....

I’ve seen every bad Saints season there was and to me the Ditka years were the worst in franchise history. At we had a good offense in the 1-15 year.

I don’t know if Ditka was our worst coach ever only because I don’t have the full historical context (didn’t start watching closely until 1987), but I do know that this was the worst QB stat line I have ever witnessed in a Saints uniform.

We definitely had worse coaches as JD Roberts probably wins that and there were some other questionable coaches too . Ditka was just not a good fit here and it became real obvious real quick.

Since we dipping into the way back when machine another cool memory I had was with my cousin who was thinking about committing to ULL (USL back then) and I went with him on his visit in 1996.

I still was on team Brooks over Jake later in life.
The Brooks/Delhomme comparison is interesting because it my mind it parallels the Rattle/Haener duo when it comes to styles and potential ability

Yeah, Ditka was so finished with coaching long before he came to New Orleans. He wanted to play golf, open restaurants, do interviews and not much football stuff.

We needed a coach who would come in and move the team to a more modern style and Benson hired the exact opposite.

Crazy thing is that guy was a US Senator later in life

Oh, what “could have been!”

Ditka was full of himself; demanded his own office, and had expectations sky high… only to fall flat.

Old School WhoDats remember the old “Iron Era” website in anticipation of good things to come from Iron Mike Ditka. :covri:

His giving away our entire draft to get Ricky Williams was the boneheaded move of the century!

:gosaints:
Loomis gave away 4 picks for Trautman, and 3 for Baun

I was excited when Ditka came in. Ultimately it failed, but he did build a good Oline and the defense wasn't too bad. Just with no QB or WRs, it was doomed. And the Ricky Williams debacle, it just went south.
The o-line was pretty bad early on. Outside of Roaf, the protection was pretty bad. But it got better towards the end.
