Nuggets fire Mike Malone and Calvin Booth: Coach, GM out in Denver less than two years after title, per report
The Nuggets are cleaning house in a pair of surprising firings during the final week of the regular seasonwww.cbssports.com
Can you recap?Inside Nuggets’ ‘cold war’ that led to firing both Michael Malone, Calvin Booth
Why did the Nuggets choose to fire both coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth? And more importantly, why now?www.nytimes.com
Some insight….
What I got from it is that ownership got tired of their GM and coach being at each other all the time, with differing philosophies….Can you recap?
Malone was hired in 2015 and Booth was hired in 2020What I got from it is that ownership got tired of their GM and coach being at each other all the time, with differing philosophies….
GM wanted coach to play young guys coach didn’t do it. They hated each other.
Jokic and some other players have grown tired of Malone’s style. Apparently he’s a hard arse.
Ownership decided to end em both with one fell swoop and try to provide a boost for the playoffs.
An excerpt:
The choice to fire the general manager and the coach at the same time is a rare one in the NBA. But it was the timing of it all — with just three games left in the regular season — that made it so much more stunning.
The rationale was twofold: In making this move, they would eliminate much of the negativity that team officials had struggled to navigate all season long, an emotional roller coaster that appeared to be bothering Jokić, in particular, more than ever. What’s more, this approach would also give Malone’s replacement, longtime assistant David Adelman, a chance to audition for the job heading into this offseason.
Not sure on that…..Malone was hired in 2015 and Booth was hired in 2020
I've read several articles that talk about Booth's questionable roster decisions....I just wonder if Malone was a problem before Booth was hired or was it after they started to clash?
I guess I just wonder if Malone was always that way, or if he started doubling down due to the problems between him and the GMNot sure on that…..
From the one article I read the players have tuned out Malone as he’s supposedly a hard arse. They were beyond tired of his coaching style.
I’ll bet he was always that way, good question tho.I guess I just wonder if Malone was always that way, or if he started doubling down due to the problems between him and the GM
I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about the NBA coaches, but until now I have never heard that players had an issue with Malone's coaching. It just makes me wonder if he started squeezing too hard after things got heated between he and Booth. I don't have the link, but one article I saw described how vital veteran players (especially ones that were good defenders) were allowed to leave and the replacements weren't getting the job done. I could see where that would lead to players getting more minutes and Malone's demeanor deteriorating which would obviously lead to issues with the players. I just can't see a coach of Malone's caliber running his star player into the ground if he felt like there was another option. In the past 5 games Jokic has averaged 40 minutes a game and is at like 37 on the season.I’ll bet he was always that way, good question tho.
