1 - KC: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
The Chiefs are working out Joeckel, Lane Johnson, Geno Smith, and Sharrif Floyd in the coming weeks. The interest in Floyd is reported to be genuine, so this pick is starting to look less and less like a sure thing. Now that Star has been reported healthy, he could be in the mix as well. However, Joeckel remains the safest pick, and the Chiefs and their new front offense cannot afford to whiff on this pick. Alternate pick: Sharrif Floyd, DT Florida
2 - JAX: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
While I still maintain that the biggest need is cornerback with the departure of both starters in FA, word is they are strongly leaning toward pass rush. If that is the case, Jordan is the no brainer pick. Every team in the top 4 is rumored to Smith as well, but I think the FO gives Gabbert one more year. Maybe they get lucky and draft first next year and get Bridgewater. Jordan instantly provides an upgrade and some coverage skills for the LEO spot. Alternate pick: Dee Milliner, CB Alabama
3 - OAK: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
Now that he has been restored to full participation, Star, who was once considered the best player in this draft overall, retakes his rightful spot atop the defensive tackle rankings. Star will be an impact guy in the middle of the Raiders defense from day one. He is unblockable one on one, and has some pass rush skills to go along with his tremendous run stop ability. Good pickup for the Raiders in a huge spot of need. Alternate pick: Geno Smith, QB West Virginia
4 - PHI: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
The biggest reason, in my humble opinion, that the "Dream Team" did not work out was Mike Vick not staying healthy. This was a direct result of atrocious offensive line play. Enter Eric Fisher, who many say is actually better than Joeckel. Athletic and powerful, he fits right in with the style of offense Kelly wants to run in Philly. There is too much offensive talent on that team to not be able to use it. Solid and safe pick. Alternate pick: Shariff Floyd, DT Florida
5 - DET: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
So many needs, so many choices. As of late Ansah has gained some steam, while Lane Johnson is somewhat of a reach at this point. I believe though that the Lions have to be smart enough to know that Ansah is not a Top 5 talent, while Milliner is. He addresses a need and also offers the right value at this point. Alternate pick: Ezekiel Ansah, DE BYU
6 - CLE: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
I've bounced around with this pick a few times, but one thing is certain. They need a speed rusher opposite Kruger because as he proved last year, he isn't the same player without an impact guy on the other side. Mingo's athleticism is what makes him so intriguing, thus making him hard to pass on. Alternate pick: Geno Smith, QB West Virginia
7 - ARI: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Now that the dust has settled on the quarterback market and Carson Palmer is in the desert, we can all but conclude that Geno is out of the race here. The biggest priority to protecting a statue like Palmer is tackle, and Johnson fits the bill. Testing the best of any tackle in combine history, he still has room to grow and learn the position. But man does he have the tools. Alternate pick: Geno Smith, QB West Virginia
8 - BUF: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
And his "slide" stops here. Buffalo may want to wait and nab Nassib later on day two or even trade back into the first to land him, but the combination of intelligence and production make Smith their guy. This isn't my gut pick, I like the Nassib scenario better, but it makes the most sense at this point. Alternate pick: Chance Warmack, OG Alabama
9 - NYJ: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Yes, I know this isn't the best value pick, but good grief this team is void of talent on the offensive side...not a single playmaker to be found. Ryan has to realize that there are some serious holes there, and while WR is deep in this class, why pass on the one with the biggest playmaking ability? Alternate pick: Jarvis Jones, OLB Georgia
10 - TEN: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
The next two picks could flip flop because these two rare guard prospects are neck and neck. Tennessee needs to continue to build on their offensive line. Adding Levitre helps, but pair him with Cooper/Warmack, and they instantly have one of the better interior lines in the league. Also makes a happy CJ2K. Alternate pick: Bjoern Werner, DE Florida State
11 - SD: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
This line has been struggling for a couple of years now. Ignoring it again in this draft would be detrimental to Phillip Rivers' career. Cooper impressed at Pro Day and solidified himself as a first round talent. Good value at 11 and could also help revitalize Ryan Mathews' career as well. Alternate pick: Xavier Rhodes, CB Florida State
12 - MIA: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
The Fins landed coveted young corner Brent Grimes in FA, but they still have a significant need on the other side of the field. Enter Rhodes, a big, aggressive corner who likes to play with his hands on the receiver. Decent value meets big time need. Alternate pick: Shariff Floyd, DT Florida
13 - TB: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
Trufant has made a push to be the second best corner in this draft with his versitility and size. In this scenario, the Bucs were unsuccessful in landing Revis, making cornerback the biggest need. Trufant has the bloodline, and Tampa hopes he can follow in the footsteps of his brother. Alternate pick: Tavon Austin, WR West Virginia
14 - CAR: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Carolina is thrilled to find him here. Once a top 3 pick, the return of Star and the lack of need between 3-13 help Floyd land here. They get a young, ascending player who has a great motor and a good penetrating ability. Nice pick. Alternate pick: Corrderelle Patterson, WR Tennessee
15 - NO: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
There is absolutely NO WAY that New Orleans can pass on his production. He has his flaws, as does every prospect in the draft, but he proved time and time again he can play with the best on a consistent basis. He'll need to get stronger against the run, but he won't be expected to be a run plugger. Unleash him to pin his ears back and get after the QB. An impact pick for the Saints. Alternate pick: DJ Fluker, OT Alabama
16 - STL: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
I have changed my stance on Patterson vs Hunter as of late. Due to the high ceiling and big play potential of Patterson, I moved him ahead of his teammate. Sam Bradford (bless his soul) needs help on offense. I believe Patterson can be a difference maker, if not right away, then definitely as the season progresses, much like Blackmon last year who went much higher. Alternate pick: Sheldon Richardson, DT Mizzou
17 - PIT: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
This defense is aging and losing a step, and Ogletree is the most athletic linebacker in the draft. Most have him slated for an inside role, but I think this kid could play any linebacker spot he pleases. His sideline to sideline speed is unheard of at the position, and his coverage skills are a plus. He could be a terror on the outside of that Steel Curtain. Alternate pick: Keenan Allen, WR Cal
18 - DAL: Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas
This kid can do just about everything in the secondary, a sore spot for the Cowboys. With Brandon Carr and Mo Claiborne in place at corner, they need some help over the top. Vaccaro is a hardnosed player well suited for strong safety. Alternate pick: DJ Fluker, OT Alabama
19 - NYG: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
Eli Manning is a pretty effective QB when he is upright, and the running game could use a boost. Fluker is huge, has a wider wingspan than 6'10 Hornets forward Anthony Davis while only standing 6'5". He's a mauler in the run game and can develop into a better pass blocker. Decent value and a good upgrade for them. Alternate pick: Bjoern Werner, DE Florida State
20 - CHI: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
Now that Urlacher has moved on, the Bears must find a young LB to fill that void. Reminiscent of Urlacher, Te'o brings incredible intangibles to the table. He does have issues against power run teams (like Bama) but that can be fixed. Once talked about as a top 5 pick, his slide stops here. Alternate pick: Tyler Eifert, TE Notre Dame
21 - CIN: Matt Elam, SS, Florida
This is a team on the rise, and it's defense is a major reason why. They have talent on the offensive side of the ball with Dalton, Green, Gresham and Zeitler on the line. They may lose Andre Smith, but the longer he stays out there the higher the chance he resigns. So safety is the priority, and Elam fits well with their ferocity on defense. Some say he is the best safety in the draft, so good value meets need here. Alternate pick: Keenan Allen, WR Cal
22 - STL: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
A pure disruptor in the middle, he was second on his team with 70+ tackles. That's impressive for any lineman. A strong penetrator and fits best at a 4-3 tackle spot. Pair him with Brockers and the Rams are young and scary up front. Alternate pick: Jonathon Cyprien, FlU
23 - MIN: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
Some argue he won't last this long, but adding a pass rusher opposite Allen that they haven't had since Ray Edwards heyday is a must. Werner is an immediate upgrade to the pass rush. Next? Alternate pick: Keenan Allen, WR Cal
24 - IND: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
After releasing Dwight Freeney, they have to find a replacement. I don't see Jerry Hughes, the former first round pick, being the solution. Not to mention this regime didn't draft him. So Moore is there and becomes the pick. He has the versatility to play upright or with his hand in the ground, which should make him a good fit in Pagano's defense. Regardless of how reportedly bad his combine interviews were, the kid can flat out play. Alternate pick: Menelik Watson, OT Florida State
25 - MIN: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
The need for ILB is there, and Minter is a machine. He flies between the tackles, and makes plays sideline to sideline. A pretty under the radar guy that I believe will make an impact from day one.
26 - GB: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
I've gotten a lot of criticism over this pick from Packer fans, but I don't understand why. There is a lot of young talent on the defensive side of the ball that will develop under Capers, but they HAVE to have an answer at RB. Alternate pick: Jonathon Cyprien, S FIU
27 - HOU: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
Put this guy opposite Johnson and watch the fireworks. Houston is a team without many holes, though right tackle could possibly be one. Adding a playmaker to further enhance this offense would be a good idea. Alternate pick:
28 - DEN: Jonathan Cyprien, SS, Florida International
A big, physical safety to enforce that backend. I feel this guy is pretty underrated coming from the Sun Belt Conference, but he'll make noise on the next level. Really like his size and aggression, and after watching Rahim Moore cause the Broncs the Super Bowl last year, this makes sense. Alternate pick: Sylvester Williams, DT North Carolina
29 - NE: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Add another weapon to the Pats stable...oh wait, they don't have any receivers outside of Gronk and Hernandez you say? By God you're right! Losing Welker and cutting Lloyd left this team in need of pass catchers. Enter Hunter, a big and physical wideout with plenty of upside. Alternate pick: DJ Hayden, CB Houston
30 - ATL: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
The best TE in this draft to groom under and eventually replace arguably the best TE of all time. Makes sense on every level. Alternate pick: Menelik Watson, OT Florida State
31 - SF: Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist
Big Hunt can easily play the DE spot in the 9'ers defense with his size and athleticism, replacing the departed Jean Francois. He occasionally has leverage issues but at 6'8", it's easy to see why. Alternate pick: Jamie Collins, OLB Southern Miss
32 - BAL: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
All of the guys they wanted are gone, leaving them to fill the next need on the board. Banks is a big corner that can fill the void left by Cary Williams. Alternate pick: Zach Ertz, TE Stanford
Let me know what you think!
