Nine days after the Boykin trade, Shepherd collided with running back Darren Sproles during practice and went down with a torn ACL. ESPN's Phil Sheridan reports that Shepherd is out for the season.

Though Boykin only played 42% of the team's snaps in 2014, he was arguably their best corner, and defensive coordinator Bill Davis called him one of his favorite players. The draft pick the Eagles got in return was nice, but the trade now looks worse as their secondary took a step back, and the player thought to replace Boykin is out for the year.

Shady McCoy is either doing a facepalm, or laughing his arse off right now.

:gosaints:

I hardly think a 6th round draft choice was going to make that much of an impact. While it's not uncommon, it's very rare especially at the CB position.

I'd think that trading Boykin had more to do with a feeling that 2nd round pick Eric Rowe was ready to step up and take his place more than anything to do with the 6th round pick --JaCorey Shepherd. They still have another 6th round corner btw -- Randall Evans.

Boykin was entering the last year of his contract and they got something for him, with a 2nd rounder waiting to fill in. Having 2 6th round corners also provided some extra depth.

So, yes, they'll lose some depth. But it's not unheard of for a 6th rounder to not even make the team -- and they had 2 6th round corners. Don't think it's that big of a deal, IMHO. The Boykin trade isn't even all about this year, it's going to be what happens in the next few seasons. And again, if that 2nd rounder pans out and just one of the two 6th rounders also stick to provide depth, it may not be a horrible trade for a guy who was on the last year of his contract.

Since we play the Eagles when it counts, that's important news.

One of the only absolute no worries layups I have on the Saints schedule are the Eagles. That team is going down and going down hard this year, and this will be Chip Kelly's last season in the NFL. Mark it down.

They traded Boykin because he was only 5'9. Doesnt fit into Chips criteria at the position...especially in the outside.

Boykin also wanted to play outside and they just didnt have a spot for him there.

Rookie had something to do with it but more or less he didnt fit

Yea... Them and the Rams... Smh

No, the Rams scare me. They've had the Saints number the last few meetings as well.

The Eagles though, I work with some die hard Eagles fans and they've said Kelly has "smartest man in the room" syndrome. He will make moves that are absurdly stupid for the sake of trying to get all the hype on himself and his "genius".

Everything they've told me is the Eagles are primed to self-destruct and Kelly continues to alienate the locker room. My gut says this is it for Chip Kelly.

Chip Kelly is really setting himself up for a whole bucket of poop to fall on his head. If his results are anything less than stellar, he will be mocked and chided endlessly, and probably won't keep his job.

I'm not arguing that a coach should hew to conventional wisdom simply to assuage the doubts of the fanbase/ownership, but at some point you have to wonder where his head is at.

I am in shock that he's practically giving away their best players for nothing.

Boylin had 7 interceptions last year, they will miss that in the secondary.

How is Chip on the hot seat, he is 20-12. That's a very good record considering how hard that division plays eachother.

I don't think he's really on the hot seat yet, but if his moves this off season blow up in his face, he could be sitting in the hot seat before 2016.
