I think Sean Payton was sort of a left field hire in that I doubt anyone here during that time had him on radar.

Hell, I remember many of us being disappointed and thinking we only hired him because he was the cheapest option.

Joking posts aside, I think this thread is more so about that sort of left field, not the “name brand” out of left field type hire.
