I think we will have a new GM before we have a new head coach. Mickey Loomis has come a long way since he was given the title of GM. I believe his unique manner handling the salary cap while staying within the rules was brilliant.

Unfortunately, a salary cap management system of kicking the can down the road relies on an annual increase in the cap. This was derailed in the Covid years and now it’s time to start over again.

It’s only speculation on my part, but I think Gayle Benson sees an opportunity, if not a need, for a fresh start that would ultimately be her legacy as owner. This would not be done in a vacuum. Much like Tom Benson had league help when he chose Jim Finks as GM, she will have all the necessary resources to make a reasoned decision with the hire.

The fans who came of age during the Payton/Brees years expect to have a winning team and are the future season ticket owners. They haven’t learned to live with those years leading up to our first winning season. Attention spans have grown shorter and there are a lot more ways to spend leisure time money.

Just a gut feeling, but I think a fresh start is in the cards and will involve more than a coaching hire.

Certainly plausible - it's as good a time as any to plant an entirely new garden.

Regardless of how Rizzi does, there's not likely to be external market for him as the season moves to a close and Gayle will have time between now and the off-season to check for who is available for a GM change. It would be foolish to simply decide to move from Mickey without a target they believe in.

Maybe he should step away from either the Saints or the Pelicans and focus his energy on one or the other.

It would be a good model for Mrs Benson to follow….it worked for her husband back in the day when he was building his front office originally and then years later hiring SP.

Sometimes things become to comfortable and it appears that she isn’t afraid of shaking it up. Good for her.

I will be kind of surprised if there is not some shake up in our GM or Scouting. Kicking the can was fine when Brees was here and a SB was still in sights. I'd love to see someone come in with more fiscal responsibility and a new direction.

I am not sure why they signed some of the guys around 2020 that they did to such big money. And this has got us where we are today as most are currently unproductive and we are kicking their cans.

My understanding was Loomis always planned to hang it up at the end of this season - or at least that’s what I seemed to infer from comments he made after brining Randy Mueller back into the fold in a consultant role.

You’ve got Ireland and Hartley and now Mueller filling some role. It seemed to me that Loomis was ready to step away from the day-to-day GM duties.

Maybe I read too much into it all but I just felt pretty confident that he was going to retire or relinquish the GM role.

One can hope. A fresh start is and has been needed for quite some time now imo.
