Not sure how this is good for player safety, but i like the rule regardless.

I guess that's okay. It doesn't make a lick of difference to guys who actually suffer from the typical season-ending injuries (ACL, Achilles, etc), but it does allow guys that suffer injuries that'll keep them out for around 8 weeks (that would otherwise have to remain on the active roster to play again in the season) to be set aside temporarily and the team will have use for their roster spot.

i love the new rule, but can some one please explain this part for me:

it can only be one player - he will be known as the "marquee player"

so that means that 1 player per year can come back after 8 weeks of being on IR, correct? So does that mean if another player got placed on IR they must stay there for the rest of the season?

Well I know the first "marquee" player will be Suggs.

Probably not. Suggs would be eligible for the PUP list if he doesn't practise during training camp. This new rule would be for a player that gets injured during camp or early in the season.

That is my understanding of it, yes.

My confusion is on the rule that the player must be on the final 53. So does that mean that if you lose a player in the preseason, you must wait for your final 53 man roster to be official, then place him on IR and sign someone else to your 53 man roster in his place? Does that also mean that if you lose a guy week one of the preseason, the earliest he can come back is still going to be Week 9?

I have never understood the IR rule. It never made sense that they forced a team to place a player that might be out half the season on IR for the whole season. They should be allowed to bring the player back. I know they did it to avoid a team from holding players by placing them on IR as another way of avoiding losing a player.

Here's what I don't understand. Let's say you have two players hurt in week 1.

Must you designate one of them the marquee player immediately?

Or can you wait to see which gets healthy quicker, before deciding who is the one to return later in the season?

that was going to be my next question. i would assume that the team would have until the player starts practicing (if i understand correctly the marquee player cannot practice for 6 out of the 8 weeks on IR), to notify the league of who you are going to use the marquee on. but then again this is the nfl, so nothing is logical.
