With 17 games, extra wildcards and the league looking to go to 18 games, why are the rosters not expanding? It's been since 2011 that the active roster is 46. What should the active roster be? Thoughts? I say 60. NFL has plenty of money for that, right?

At least let the game day roster be 53. I dont know what benefit or disadvantage a team has if all players are active.

The only reason to not have bigger rosters is money. More money for the owners to keep and fewer slices taken out of the players pie. Otherwise why not have enough players where teams don’t have to do a juggling act during the season?

I’ve always thought the game day roster should be changed. Why should you only be able to dress 46. Now with a 17 game season there’s even more reason to eliminate it. The PS is a good thing. Paying players a little less and the ability to cut and sign with no waiver process is a plus, especially now that vets can be added too.

I think it would still be beneficial to maintain a total roster that is larger than the gameday roster, to help teams manage minor injuries and other player situations. That or allow for unlimited moves to and from the practice squad roster, with better protection for some or all of those players from being poached.

I do agree with the idea of bumping the roster up to something like 60, and adjusting the number of available players on the gameday roster in conjunction, perhaps then, to 53.

People have rightly been calling for this since the 1800s. The salary cap takes big jumps every year. They could easily afford to pay contracts that collectively are less than the rookie pool.

A family in the 1800s has come outside to protest the inadequate team roster size in pro football

It should expand IMO. More nfl quality players makes a better product. better product is more profits. Cost would be minimal. Want to expand internationally? Expanding rosters is a piece of the puzzle. More better players, a couple more coaches on each team. It’s a no brainer

Expanding the rosters makes to much sense. A topic that’s brought up and discussed by fans of every team all the time. The cost to owners to expand is the most obvious reason why it hasn’t happened. Yet money is something these owners have so much of. So, at the end of the day, it’s kind of ridiculous that adding a few roster spots never gets done. Just like the obvious problems with officiating that could be so much better if they really wanted it to be.

I always thought that the 3 core kicking (maybe the 2 dedicated returners as well) should not count on either the 53 or the 46 game day roster. Every team must have those 3 & they do little else on gameday. An extra 3 players wouldn't make a big dent on the payroll, but will definitely offer another layer of insurance against in game injury. A change of less than 100 players league wide, shouldn't put the owners in the poorhouse.
Small steps that make sense!

53 is more than enough to field a team on Sundays, there is no justifiable reason for 60 players on a team. Just let them all dress and be eligible to play.

The roster is flexible during the season - the team you begin the season with is not the one you need to end with, and IR takes care of replacing injured players. The owners don't care, there is just no reason to do it.

Would have a big effect on salary cap and the ability to pay more players what they deserve. Easier to just promote from the practice squad

The smaller roster keeps teams from stashing guys they have no plans of playing but don't want other teams to have. Injuries and roster management are a huge part of the game even if it isn't pretty or convenient. I can understand why people want a larger roster though.

I've always heard the reason for the 46 active day is to minimize the advantage of a team with a completely healthy roster vs a team with injuries. That works in the Saints' favor. You don't want to go against a team with 7 extra healthy bodies that they can rotate in while we're pulling up players from the streets just to field a team.
