NFL rosters should be 60 players. (1 Viewer)

I've always heard the reason for the 46 active day is to minimize the advantage of a team with a completely healthy roster vs a team with injuries. That works in the Saints' favor. You don't want to go against a team with 7 extra healthy bodies that they can rotate in while we're pulling up players from the streets just to field a team.

You could do the same thing with 53 and 60.

how about this idea. keep the 53 man gameday roster but the practice squad each team should be allowed to protect a limited amount of players say 5 or 7 each week from being taken by another team. That way its like having an expanded roster without changing the game day roster limit therefore keeping the team finances close to the same

Here is the thing... Expanding the roster to 60 and then 53 for games would mean the teams on average would only net, I don't know, lets just say like $145 million operating income a year each instead of $150 million. Those poor, poor, pitiful owners! How would they survive?

I don’t think anyone would want to sign practice squad contracts if they could be prevented from signing larger active roster contracts. I think it’s ok that the only way to protect a player is to put him on the 53.

Yeah they probably won’t ever go to 60 players because of greed. However, it needs to really be 54 at least considering one roster spot is for a Long Snapper.

Oh I agree they should expand the roster some. I was just stating why the discrepancy in active vs game day roster.

I don't know about going to 60 but I kind of like the idea of not counting the specialist. That would free up 3 spots (K, P, LS).

I don't think teams lose because someone's bottom roster is better. There is very little differene between 46-53 guys and P/S or street guys they are all still some of the best football players.

The bigger cause of losing in that Situation is that the loss of a big time Stat player was too much to overcome. No bottom roster guy Is going to cover for that.

Well if I have, let’s say, 4 extra defensive lone-men, then I have a much better rotation to keep all the big guys fresh. Fresh means they play better.

Nfl roster are 53 on the active roster and 16 on the practice squad. Plus the gameday roster is 48 game day active now plus a 3rd QB. Also you can call up 2 guys from the practice squad to the active roster without making a move.

Plus IR is only 4 weeks now and a team can bring 8 players off it now during the season compare to
1993 to 2011- IR out for the season
2012 to 2016- 1 player a team can play after after 8 weeks out
2017 to 2019- 2 players a team can play after 8 games out
2020 to 2021- 3 players a team can play after 8 games out

With 17 games, extra wildcards and the league looking to go to 18 games, why are the rosters not expanding? It's been since 2011 that the active roster is 46. What should the active roster be? Thoughts? I say 60. NFL has plenty of money for that, right?
50 makes more sense and let them all dress.

You could make it to where you can't have more than a certain amount of players active over your opponent in case they have a bunch of injuries.

It's rare but sometimes the league gets some things right, and the new IR rules are one of them. Up to 8 and only have to miss 4 weeks is great.
