NFL statistics for Rushing Success Rate Percentage is defined as: A successful rush gains at least 40% of the yards required on first down, 60% of the yards required on second down, and 100% of the yards required on third and fourth down.

Of all of the NFL players who have had more than 10 carries this year, Taysom Hill leads all players with a 70.0% Rushing Success Rate. Most of the NFL RBs have a success rate in the 40 to 60 percent range with De'Von Achane leading them all at 69.2%. Out of the Saints RBs Alvin Kamara has a 47.1% success rate, Jamaal Williams has a 46.7% success rate, and Kendre Miller has a 32.1% success rate. (Although Rashid Shaheed doesn't qualify here with him having only 6 carries so far this year for 33 yards averaging 5.5 yards per carry, his rushing success rate is 83.3%.) Derek Carr has a 31.6% rushing success rate.

Behind Hill in the QB group is Kyler Murray at 69.2%, Josh Allen at 66.0%, Anthony Richardson at 64.0%, Russell Wilson at 61.9%, DeShaun Watson at 61.5%, Jalen Hurts at 60.0%, Bryce Young 59.1%, Mac Jones at 57.7%, Justin Fields at 56.9%, Tyson Bagent at 56.5%, Patrick Mahomes at 56.3%, Lamar Jackson at 53.5%, Brock Purdy at 53.3%, Desmond Ridder at 53.1%, Sam Howell at 52,9%, Daniel Jones at 52.5%, C.J. Stroud at 52.2%, Dak Prescott at 51.5%, Kirk Cousins at 50.0%, and P.J. Walker at 50.0%. All other QBs are below 50.0% including Joshua Dobbs at 48.6%. Most others are well below 50.0%.

What these statistics show is that Taysom Hill has a Rushing Success Rate of 10 to 20% Higher than most of the top NFL RBs and QBs. Saints RBs Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams are in range of most RBs across the league, but both have a rushing success rate of 23% less than Taysom Hill. Rashid Shaheed should be used more often with motion so that the Jet Sweep remains part of the Saints rushing attack with somewhat of an element of surprise.

The Saints Brass have been leaving a lot on the table by not utilizing Taysom Hill more in the run game. They shouldn't shy away from running him more, early and often. It's a crying shame that the Saints coaching staffs, present and prior, haven't schemed more ways to get Hill involved throughout the flow of the games consistently during his time with the Saints. His Strength is Power Running at the point of attack, whether it is shown, known or disguised. Hill is virtually unstoppable from the shotgun with the Power QB Run. He is also quite effective from the shotgun on QB Draw plays. What adds to the effectiveness of both of these plays is the threat of Hill passing. He is not simply a RB lined up in the shotgun in the Wildcat formation. As a passer the Saints should have Hill roll out to the right where he has the option to pass or run. With this play he isn't required to read the entire field. If he has an open receiver on the right side of the field he can throw it, otherwise, he can tuck and run with it. This is simple stuff. The Saints should utilize his downhill running ability by lining him up in the backfield and getting the ball to him with toss pitches, screen passes, wheel routes, and passes in the flat. They should also get him the ball on TE and WR Screen Passes, all of which would give him the opportunity to run downhill with a head of steam where he is most effective.

We don't see any of these alternatives. Instead, the current coaching staff tries to get him the ball as a checkdown receiver from the TE position where he is running a 7-yard curl route where the opposing LB or Safety is crashing down on him as soon as he catches the ball, with his back to the defender, without him having an opportunity to turn up field with momentum to play to his strengths. This is OK for 3rd down and 5 plays where all is needed is a 1st down. Otherwise, that's bad coaching and bad scheming. They should know better and should find ways to exploit the defenses weaknesses when defending TH7. Hopefully someone will before his career ends.

Some members here have had the opinion that using Taysom more in the run game would wear him down or get him hurt with his style of play. Let's compare Hills numbers to the 3 other QBs that currently have more rushing yards than Hill so far in 2023 and one whom he is tied with. They are Lamar Jackson, Joshua Dobbs, and Jalen Hurts. Josh Allen and Hill are tied currently in rushing yards so far in the 2023 season.

Hill most compares to Josh Allen of all QBs in running style though Hill is shorter and weighs less. Allen has carried the ball an average of 109 times in each of his first 5 full seasons of his career with a high of 124 carries in a season. His career rushing yards per attempt is 6.0. He is the Bills franchise QB, playing 100% of all offensive snaps per game, and they don't hesitate to use him effectively in the running game. Allen currently has 53 carries on the season in 2023. He is averaging 4.9 yards per rushing attempt so far through 11 games played in 2023. Allen has 261 rushing yards so far in 2023.

Another QB that compares to Hill in size and build is Jalen Hurts. During his first 3 seasons Hurts has had 367 carries, averaging 122 carries per year with a high of 165 carries last year in the 15 games he played averaging 11 carries per game, when the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl, where Hurts had an outstanding performance in that game. Hurts is the Eagles Franchise Starting QB, but they don't hesitate to have him run the ball. He has a career average of 4.8 yards per carry. Thus far in 2023 Hurts has carried the ball 100 times through 10 games averaging 10 carries per game. At his current pace he will have 170 rushing attempts on the year. He is averaging 3.5 yards per attempt so far in 2023. Hurst has 345 rushing yards so far in 2023.

It's hard to compare Hill to Lamar Jackson, who has an entirely different running style and play. What can be used is his durability as a QB who runs more than any other in the league. In his first 5 seasons Lamar has rushed 727 times, and average of 145 times per season. In the 70 games he played in during that span he averaged carrying the ball 10.38 times per game. His highest season for rushing attempts was 2019 where he carried the ball 176 times over 15 games averaging 11.73 carries per game. So far through 11 games in 2023 Jackson has carried the ball 103 times, averaging 9.18 rushing attempts per game. He has a career rushing average of 6.0 yards per attempt. He is averaging 5.3 yards per attempt so far in 2023. Jackson has 535 rushing yards so far in 2023. Lamar Jackson is the Ravens Franchise Starting QB, but they don't hesitate to have him run the ball.

Like Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields is another QB who can't be compared in style of running with Taysom. They are totally different in their style of play and from where and how they get their yardage. Fields has only 2 full seasons under his belt so far. During his first 2 seasons he carried the ball 232 times in 27 games averaging 8.59 rushing attempts per game. His highest number of attempts was last year in the 2022 season where he rushed 160 times in 15 games averaging 10.66 rushing attempts per game. In the 7 games he has played so far in 2023 Fields has rushed 65 times, an average of 9.28 times per game. He has a career average of 6.4 yards per attempt. He is averaging 5.2 yards per attempt so far in 2023. Fields has 341 rushing yards so far in 2023. When healthy Fields has been the Bears starting QB and was a 1st round pick expected to be their Franchise QB but they don't hesitate to have him run the ball.

Joshua Dobbs is the only other QB that has more rushing yards than TH7 so far in 2023. His style is also totally different from Hill. He saw almost no action in his first 3 years in the league. So far in 2023 Dobbs has carried the ball 70 times in 11 games, averaging 6.36 rushing attempts per game at 3.6 yards per carry. He has rushed for 389 yards so far in 2023. Dobbs play this year has been a surprise to most. He is on his 3rd team already this year. The Vikings encourage him to improvise and run as often as he sees fit to do so.

Hill has never carried the ball more than 96 times in a season which was last year, in 2022, in which he had the highest yards per carry over a season in his career at 6.0 per attempt and averaged the most attempts per game in a season in his career with 6 average rushes per game. In 2017 Sean Payton didn't realize yet that he had a Hummer parked in his garage. Hill got Zero carries that year. In the 5 years that followed Hill has carried the ball an average of only 63 times per full season. During that span he carried the ball 317 times in 76 games played, averaging 4.17 carries per game. He has a career rushing average of 5.5 yards per attempt. He has carried the ball 50 times with 261 rushing yards so far through the first 10 games averaging 5.2 yards per carry on an average of 5 attempts per game. The Magic Number is 7 or more Carries for Hill per game, but the Saints seem to Ignore It or Don't Fully Understand It.

Jackson (535 Yards), Dobbs (389 Yards), Hurts (345 Yards), and Fields (341 Yards) have more rushing yards so far this season than Taysom Hill (261 Yards). Josh Allen (261 Yards) is tied with TH7 but has he less rushing yards per game having played 11 games to Hills 10 so far in 2023. So far in 2023 Lamar is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, Taysom Hill is averaging 5.2 yards per carry, Justin Fields is averaging 5.2 yards per carry, Josh Allen is averaging 4.9 yards per carry, Joshua Dobbs is averaging 3.6 yards per carry, and Jalen Hurts is averaging 3.5 yards per carry.

The difference between Hill and the others is the number of attempts. If Hill was used more in the running game and his averages held true to his current average yards per carry so far in 2023, he would trail only Lamar Jackson in total rushing yardage for the year and only by a very few yards.

Since the beginning of the 2022 season (the last 27 games) the Saints are 9-0 when Taysom Hill rushes for 40 yards or more in a game and they are 3-15 when he doesn't.

The Saints are 17-1 over TH7s career when he rushes for 40 yards or more in a game.

The Saints are 18-1 when Hill has 7 or more carries in a game over his career.

The Saints have won 90% of the games played in Taysom Hills career when he gets 8 or more touches in a game.

In 2023 when Taysom rushes on a 1st and 10 play he has averaged 6.8 yards per carry through 10 games.

In 2023 when needing 3 yards or less for a 1st down or a touchdown Hill has averaged 3.9 yards per attempt on 11 carries, converting 9 attempts for 1st downs and 2 attempts for touchdowns, a 100% success rate.

In 2023 when the Saints are facing a 3rd or 4th down with 3 yards or less to go and NOT using TH7 they have converted 14 out of 21 attempts for only a 67% success rate.

In the Saints 5 wins so far in 2023 Taysom Hill has averaged 7 rushing attempts and 42.6 yards per game.

In the Saints 5 losses so far in 2023 Taysom Hill has averaged only 3 rushing attempts and only 9.6 yards per game.

Taysom Hill is averaging 5.2 yards per carry so far in 2023 on 50 attempts.

Hill has a career rushing average of 5.5 yards per carry, the highest of any Saints player in over 50 years, 2nd only to Archie Manning in franchise history.

Taysom Hill has rushed 20 times for 124 yards averaging 6.2 yards per carry in the 1st half in games so far in 2023.

Taysom Hill has rushed 30 times for 137 yards averaging 4.6 yards per carry in the 2nd half in games so far in 2023.

When leading in games so far in 2023 Taysom Hill has rushed 22 times for 112 yards averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

When tied in games so far in 2023 Taysom Hill has rushed 7 times for 31 yards averaging 4.4 yards per carry.

When trailing in games so far in 2023 Taysom Hill has rushed 21 times for 118 yards averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

In 2023 when needing 3 yards or less for a 1st down or a touchdown Hill has averaged 3.9 yards per attempt on 11 carries, converting 9 attempts for 1st downs and 2 attempts for touchdowns, a 100% success rate.

It boggles the mind why this staff just ignores these stats! They should be making sure Taysom gets the touches that the stats demand. First, because we win when he gets the touches! Secondly, because we win when he gets the touches and finally because we win! If I were a coach I would be making sure these numbers were hit for the simple fact that if someone gives me a gift like these stats, I’m going to make sure I do it so people can’t throw it in my face that I didn’t do everything possible to win the games!!!

The only major detriment I can see is Hill runs w/such VIOLENCE! He seeks out a defender to knock into next week. Seems to be constitutionally unable to slide or run out of bounds.

Hill delivers more punishment than he receives when running with the ball. He does run with Violence and isn't afraid to be the aggressor. He hasn't been without injuries.

Hill suffered a concussion during the 2020 regular season, and he Missed 1 game because of it. He also suffered a knee injury in the Wildcard victory against the Bears which kept him out of the Divisional Round Playoff Loss to the Buccaneers.

The worst Hill has been hurt since entering the NFL in 2017 was in a week 5 game October 10th, 2021, against the WFT. He was running a vertical route deep down the right sideline and was open. Winston slightly overthrew him the ball. Hill dove and laid out for the ball with it on his fingertips when the WFT CB, William Jackson, III targeted Hill by leaving his feet and delivering a wicked blow to a defenseless Hills head with a forearm, a shoulder, and helmet to helmet contact. The hit knocked Taysom out. Ater laying on the field for several minutes he had to be helped to his feet to be placed on a cart to be taken into the locker room. He later said he didn't remember anything for 45 minutes. Jackson was penalized 15 yards for an unnecessary roughness call but was not ejected nor was he fined by the league for the hit. Hill missed playing the next two games that also included a bye week due to a concussion.

On November 17th, 2021, Hill suffered a foot injury (Pedal Foot Planter Fasciitis). He played through the pain of that injury without missing any games.

On December 2nd, 2021. against the Cowboys, Hill suffered an injury to his throwing hand, a Mallet Finger.

On January 9th, 2022, Hill suffered a foot injury (Pedal Lisfranc Fracture) against the Falcons in the final game of the 2021 season.

On July 29th, 2022, Hill suffered a Chest Bruise in training camp. On September 18th, 2022, Hill again suffered a Chest Bruise and sat out 1 game due to it.

On August 15th, 2023, Hill suffered a Grade 2 Abdomen Muscle Strain in training camp. It didn't keep him from playing in week 1 of the regular season this year.

Other than those injuries Hill has been fairly durable in his professional career considering the violent way he runs the ball. He suffered 4 different season ending injuries while in college, two knee, a broken fibula, and a dislocated elbow.

Football Is A Rough Sport! You Have To Be Tough To Play The Game For A Long Time At The Pro Level!

Through 10 games of the 2023 season Taysom Hill has not yet been injured.

Taysom is a game changer. Most successful coaches would be starting him and plan the game to his strengths. He is better than Carr and most coaches would agree.
