I actually like the rule. From the surface it seems unproportionally unfair to the offense, however when you look at how the end zone is treated compared to the rest of the field at play it begins to make sense. The reasoning is that the defense is to defend its goal or end zone not field but zone. It is not called the end field it called the end zone and area that is treated much different than the rest of the field. It has a finality to it, once that zone is penetrated it's over unlike the field of play. The field is played to give the offense an opportunity to reach the end zone but once your there its a new game if you will...the endgame. Penetrate the goal. The end zone is treated as the end of the play area THE END. It is like dropping off the face of earth. Like playing basketball on a roof. If the ball goes over, your done and the defense has successfully defended its goal. Time to get a new ball and start over. It brings a sense of finality to it. Here's your shot, don't mess it up. Like winning a battle in a 4 quarter war.

Worst rule in all of sports

At worst, it should be other teams ball at the 1 yard line.

Appropriate for the infraction should be loss of down and a 15 yard penalty.

Maybe make it different if the defense managed to touch the ball before it goes out but stop rewarding them for nothing
Yep, if it's not recovered by the defense it should go back to the offense at the spot of the fumble imo.

Fair but in this case they fumbled it at the 1 or so. Seems like people might "accidentally" fumble it forward into end zone if we don't make offensive possession a priority

Totally agree! Changing that rule will mean completely changing the definition of the End Zone as it would just become a simple boundary. I bet Dan Orlovsky loves this idea.

I’m cool with them finally trying to address this rule, it’s been a long time coming. It’s the least they can do for the impending removal of the hip tackle.

I like the rule, adds drama and the ability for an unexpected swing of momentum. Football hasn’t seemed to suffer for all these decades with the rule in place.
In a way, I would disagree. So if you fumble the ball and it goes into the endzone, OOB, then the opposing team gets the ball. However, if a player stretches his arm out, only taps the pylon, then loses the ball, he’s awarded a TD. To me that doesn’t make sense.

The rule should be - you fumble out the side of the end zone, it’s treated like a fumble out of bounds under 2-minutes. It’s returned to the spot of the fumble.

If it’s fumbled out the back - it’s a touch back - because your team should have had ample opportunities to recover in the 10 yds from the goal line to the back of the end zone.
