Nick Fairely (2 Viewers)

Peterson, Fairley and Nevis will be off the board when the Saints pick.

he's the type of player who's worth trading up for.

there's still time for other nosetackles to emerge later in the draft like

jerrell powe (ole miss), phil taylor (baylor), kendrick ellis (hampton) to name a few to keep your eye on.

what makes fairley so special is that he can actually rush the passer from the NT position. u don't see that too often. only kris jenkins, jay ratliff and shaun rogers excel at doing it in the pros when healthy that i can think off.

6'5 300 lbs isn't big enough? Ok...

Jimmy Kennedy
Jonathan Sullivan
Ryan Sims
Gerard Warren
Adam Carrikker
Justin Harrell

All similar players who were highly touted, ultra-productive college players and ended up as NFL busts. I'm sure there are plenty more, those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Jimmy Kennedy was a fat blob who made his plays because he was bigger than anyone.
Sullivan didn't have any sacks, or tackles for loss, just some QB hurries and "potential".
Harrell was always hurt

Fairley is leading the best conference in the country in tackles for loss, and can't even be double-teamed. He is a freak.

Same was said about those other guys. Same for Kentwan Balmer, Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, etc.

Chris Long is a DT? Kentwan Balmer was drafted completely on potential, and combine numbers. Dorsey is now playing DE in a 3-4 when he's a 4-3 DT.

So what? I can also make lists of highly touted, ultra-productive DE's, LB's, QB's, RB's, CB's, FS's, SS's, OT's, WR's, and TE's that ended up as NFL busts.

It's the freaking draft, no one's a sure fire hit.

I'll say this, Fairley looks like an Anthony Hargrove type defensive lineman, just a lot more strength and burst. He looks like he could play DE as well and still be a monster, but regardless, if Saints took him, I'd be a happy camper.

What funny is that if this thread was titled Drake Nevis it would be full of all the anti-LSU people calling the LSU people homers, but in reality the two best DTs in the country played in that game and if we were to get either of them we'd be lucky.

He's been having a great season even before he destroyed the LSU line. If he's there when we pick I'll do a backflip.

Yeah, but can he do a backflip? Cause I know a DT that can.

You do realize that eventually every team actually has to draft a DT or two, right?

Yeah, but the undersized "quick" guys are a pretty high bust ratio. They get by on speed and are strong enough to beat college lineman, but then they get to the NFL and they're overmatched by giant interior lineman and their speed is less useful. Add that to the problem of most of them not having great technique because they've been able to get away with it up to that point.

Obviously you're going to have freaks like Suh or Ngata who are stars from day one. Guys who can both rush the passer and hold ground on double teams and play two gaps. Fairley is not that kind of player in my opinion. Again the drafts for the past 7-8 years are full of guys like him who dominate in college and then just disappear. When you look at the successful ones, they're more the run-plugger types or guys who weren't of such high reknown in college because they were busy freeing up the other guy (Kyle Williams has turned out to be a better NFL player than Glenn Dorsey, for instance).

If Nevis was 6' 5", 300+, no you wouldn't but he's not. He'll be a good player though. Noone played the LSU homer card for Glenn Dorsey, only for the Jacob Hesters and Ali Highsmiths.

6'5 300 lbs is not undersized. Anthony Hargrove is undersized at 6'3 272 lbs. What do you consider a good sized DT?
