Nick Underhill thinks Carr will be Saints starter [mod edit: Moore-Carr meeting went well; Saints plan is to keep Carr in 2025 & figure out contract] (330 Viewers)

Obviously this falls in the realm of “FWIW,” but obviously Nick is as dialed-in as anyone, so I figured it was worth posting.

It's worth posting and also worth pointing out Nick was dialed in on Mike McCarthy as some sort of front runner for the HC Job and we didn't even schedule an interview w/ him.

Well, luckily for Carr, if he stays, he has yet another excuse for being below average. "It's a new system", "He has a new coach" "Team is rebuilding around him" "blah blah blah". In the mean time, he gets his $$$ for 5-7 wins.

But hey, the 12th year! This may be the year he will finally put it all together.

Nick has always thought that Carr was going to be the week 1 starter based on how much it would cost to cut Carr and the amount of money they would have to work with Pre-June 1. However, Nick has also said that he does not know what Moore wants to do and Moore might want to move on.

This is really nothing new and he's not giving inside information about the situation. We will find out soon based on what they end up doing or not doing with Carr's contract and the $10 million roster bonus he is due. I think that's due on March 13 or 15.

Carr reminds me so much of Brandon Ingram. Can't wait till he is gone

In fairness, Nick is basing his assessment more on the cap and his expectations about how the Saints might approach the challenges associated with Carr's contract.

My understanding is that it can go either way (because of the cap_ with a strong sense that Carr's foot is more out the door than in it. But we shall see.

One look at the comments and replies to that tweet tells me there will be so many unhappy people if this is true.

I’m actually in favor of one more year with Carr. I don’t see the downside of trying him out under the new regime before moving on from him. I know people want to rebuild and are getting impatient, but Carr hasn’t been the reason why we’ve been terrible. There have been so many factors.

As of now .. Yes. But anything can change from now till the draft.
Nah, well know much sooner. If they restructure him the next couple weeks he stays. If they don't restructure him we should start seeing a flurry of activity to get under the cap in the next couple weeks. The longer things stay quiet the more likely a Carr restructure is part of their plans.
Small chance they just keep him while not restructuring him but once again the Saints will have to start being very active to get under the cap.

Bolded is what's likely, given the current FO's MO.

Key question for Moore this first year is "What do you want your first year to look like?"

The thing with Nick is that I think he is very dialed in with agents, players, assistant coaches, and some Superdome Commission members, but I don't think he really has much in the way of front office connections. Nobody really does because they are notoriously tight lipped and only let out what they want to let out.

So if it's information that would only be known by people in the front office, he often times doesn't have the sources to know exactly what is going on. It's likely why he though McCarthy was under serious consideration. He was likely getting that from McCarthy's agent.

But he's usually good about saying when he thinks something based on sources or if he's just reading the situation and giving an opinion. It's the a later regarding Carr.

They could choose to not restructure him but also keep him as the starter. But I think the big tell will be whether or not they pay his $10 million roster bonus which is due in 2 to 3 weeks IIRC.
