Noodle Arm starting to get a little heat from hometown columnist?? (2 Viewers)

But honestly, it's really not his arm strength. He can hum it down field with ease. Its the accuracy, he has terrible accuracy beyond 15 yards.

His velocity and release are pretty weak though. While he lacks in accuracy in long throws, and also lacks a lot of zip.

He gets it downfield like I do and anyone else with a weak arm. Throwing it as high as possible.

I swear he scrapes the dome's top on some of his duck throws to White deep.

If you notice, when he throws deep it's usually very quickly after the snap and very high. He doesn't have the arm to lead a receiver deep.

So true

maybe, but it still could be his arm strength causing bad accuracy. he can throw it far but has to try to hard to do it? kind of like throwing a fast ball, if you try to hard you may hit 95mph but miss the catcher while Randy Johnson can control 95mph because we can actually throw 105mph.

just a thought.

Had the game ended the way it should have - in regulation with Roman Harper catching a horribly thrown Ryan pass on the goal line can you imagine the heat Ryan should rightfully be getting? I can't begin to describe how incredibly "horseshoe jammed up their collective rectums" lucky the Falcons were to even get to the point Smith would be so afraid of Drew Brees he did something moronic. The Falcons had no business getting to OT.

Like others have said Ryan's deep attempts have a weird arc to them. They all tend to hang up in the air and give the DBs time to close the gap. This is one of the reasons White, Gonzalez, and Jones push off so much. They get separation but Ryan floaters allow DBs to get back into better coverage position. So to create space they all push off. Ryan's a game manager. He's not an elite dynamic playmaker. If you put him in the right position - strong running game, short passes to his check downs, occasional deep pass versus 8 in the box, he won't lose the game for you.

I think the two are very related. If he has to put too much effort into the heave to get it down the field, then he cannot do it in the fluid and consistent manner that it takes to have the accuracy.

I have no problems with his shortcomings. :ezbill:

edit: Just saw your post Jvitito, great minds think alike.

Somewhere, an enraged John Clayton sits at his laptop reading that article, stammering..."But...but...he's ELITE!!!! I said so! It doesn't matter if he hasn't won a playoff game!!!! ELITE!!!!!"

Can't put my finger on it, but Ryan's arm is not weak. It's average. Every few throws are floaters or off target, seemingly for no reason. That will eventually cost the Falcons in crunch time, and make me very happy.

:smilielol:dumb*** Falcons thought their reason for not being able to throw the ball deep was their lack of explosive WRs, so they sell the house and draft Julio Jones. Yet the real reason is their loser QB can't throw the ball 20 yards.

The issue with these "insiders" looking at stats like this is that they put it all on the QB. How do the decide if the QB missed their receiver or if the receiver ran the route wrong or just off enough. QB's are throwing to a spot, because the receiver is 10-20 yards away from their spot when the ball is launched.

So, really, if a QB isn't having success on longer passes it's a combination of that QB and the WR timing and accuracy.

I think Drew deserves his props, but so does our receiving corps, WR coach, Offensive Coordinator and Sean Payton. He runs a tight ship where little mistakes aren't OK.

Of course it all comes down to coaching, but I've seen enough of Matt Ryan's throws beyond 15 yards to know he is very inaccurate. I dont know if he is doing it in practice but not on game day or what.

This response is PRICELESS:
Surely if ESPN can figure this out the brain trust of the Falcons coaching staff could figure it out. You know, the one who thinks it’s wise to go for it on 4th down on your own 30 in overtime in a must-win game against a division rival, and hand the ball off to your glacially slow running back 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage when you only need 6″?

In early '06 Drew was obviously still recovering from his shoulder injury and it showed. Yet even still, he was able to hit several deep passes and be a very dynamic playmaker. Timing and accuracy can make up for arm strength. Still nice to be able to make all of the throws on a rope, but it can be worked around.

Ryan has been behind on his timing and then once he commits the accuracy is off, combined with less then stellar arm strength it's not surprising he's having a down season.

I am not in the camp that blasted him for going for it, but the last part of that concerning the play that was called is indeed priceless. Glacial. :hihi:

Some of those commentors are so dense. Someone said Drew Brees only throws short throws, did they not read the article? lol
