I think this penalty should come with a loss of down in today's NFL (10 yards and loss of down ). First of all defensive holding is an automatic 1st regardless of distance. Secondly, we are seeing offensive lines hold more and more each year because they know the refs won't call it everytime. 10 yards and a replay of the down is seen as more beneficial than 5-8 yards and a loss of down due to a sack. With all of the rules geared towards offense, I feel like this slight tweak in the offensive holding rule could help even out the playing field for defensive players.

Or do like high school and be from the spot of the foul. If it happens 5 yards behind line of scrimmage, then 10 yds from there.

Totally agree.

It makes perfect sense but the NFL isn't interested in anything that helps the defense or would lead to more QB hits.

10 yards and loss of down? So every time we get called for holding, we will basically have to punt? What about holding on running plays? Those get called a lot too. Right now, a holding call often already wipes out a gain, and sets you back 10 yards. More often than not, it kills a drive. Taking away a down would put way too much power in the refs' hands. They could pretty much kill a drive whenever they want. Until they figure out how to uniformly call holding calls, I would be completely against this. Holding calls are already called very arbitrarily. Why increase the already heavy penalty more? I dislike when refs take over a game, and this would do that. We know they can always call holding on any given play if they want. The penalty is already pretty severe, and it's often called away from the play, or on a player who was having no impact on the play. I respectfully do not jump on this bandwagon. Rather, I think there should be a special penalty anytime someone hits Brees or Jimmy. I could get behind that ;)

Great idea, but I doubt it would ever be implemented.

Would it be possible to maybe bring this in at high school level, so that players get used to it and learn proper technique, so when they get to college and the NFL it wouldn't be such of an issue?

There is holding on every play. What we don't see is typically the calls come from the dline complaining to the refs and saying watch this guy which is after the fact. The defensive holding calls are sickening as well.

which brings me to another point, when we play press coverage, why not try to push the reciever down or out of bounds. I hate when we press and don't put hands on a guy. there is nothing illegal about doing that.

Dallas (this year) is holding at an alarming rate!

Carroll did it with defensive holding last season and now Jerry is following suit and doing it with offensive holding. Let's not forget he had the VP of officiating on his party bus before the season began. :9:

J/K of course... I haven't watched any Dallas games besides our shellacking.
