Offensive Holding (1 Viewer)

On a running play, I don't agree. On a passing play where in the ref's opinion it prevented a sack, definitely.

Let the punishment fit the crime.

I'd rather it be five yards and a loss of down. Ten plus the loss of down is a little heavy. It could be a drive killer the majority of the time. One holding call should be penalized, but shouldn't be a drive killer. I like the five and loss of a down instead.

Secondly, we are seeing offensive lines hold more and more each year because they know the refs won't call it everytime.

Do you have any stats to prove your claim or is this just a gut feeling?

I think this penalty should come with a loss of down in today's NFL (10 yards and loss of down ). First of all defensive holding is an automatic 1st regardless of distance. Secondly, we are seeing offensive lines hold more and more each year because they know the refs won't call it everytime. 10 yards and a replay of the down is seen as more beneficial than 5-8 yards and a loss of down due to a sack. With all of the rules geared towards offense, I feel like this slight tweak in the offensive holding rule could help even out the playing field for defensive players.

But how will that make more money for the NFL? The game is not about what you think but about how the NFL can scrape in more money.

However, that rule would suck if it were imposed on the saints. I'd actually just be happy if they called it.

I'd like to see D holding not be a automatic 1st but changed to a 10 yd penalty. With it being so closely watched now just seems to be a bit unfair

If there was holding on the punt play, the other team would get the ball right there. I'd send an all out blitz every time, block or get the holding call.

The problem with holding calls is that you can call holding on almost every single play on both sides of the ball.

Often times it's not called on high caliber offenses. We've had our fair share of getting away with offensive holding over the years, I won't complain at all and I won't deny it.
