Offensive Line issues may be exaggerated (1 Viewer)

I think in five months the story of the Saints 2024 season will be the offensive line. And I loved our first-round pick this year.

With the offensive line, I cannot blame Allen for the cards he has been dealt. This falls on the general manager.

It falls on the GM, former coach, front office and all the fans who desperately wanted to re-sign MT, Kamara, Lattimore and Ram after their rookie contracts, while still carrying Brees. That in itself was a miracle. We kept all of our stars, but we have paid for it for the last three years.

To start the season, sure. But you'd expect the guy to improve as the season goes on, right?

I would have expected him to enter camp with the proper footwork and hand placement down pat after spending all off season working with an OL specialist. I might have expected him to enter with better flexibility in his hips and with a better center of gravity. But nope. I am really curious why the man is incapable of grasping the fundamentals.

I think you have to wait to see how they fair against the cowboys in week 2 before we really know. The most extensive look we got to see from our line was against San Fran who were without a lot of of their game changing players. There's a lot of question marks about this line and rightfully so.

I'm starting to think all the talk about having a bad offensive line is nonsense drummed up by Media or some phony source? Either that or the Saints truly can't find anyone to add depth on their oline. I just don't understand any of it. how can we be hearing again and again and again how bad our offensive line is and yet nobody makes a move to fix it? What's going on here? I think the reports about it being trash are phony and maybe the oline will look much much better when the season starts.
Well how did the line look last year? Was Penning bad last year? We may be better based on our rookie LT and scheme but there are still issues no doubt.

A) The Saints need a veteran offensive lineman who can step into multiple positions.

B) The Saints don't want to guarantee a salary for a short-term player who could easily become physically unable to play.

I think Loomis will wait till after week 1, when veteran contracts aren't guaranteed (to the best of my knowledge. This junk changes all the time), to pick up a thirty-something-year-old lineman. At that point, someone like Tipton will be waived and hoped to clear to the practice squad, and the practice squad placeholder player will be cut.

We'll see.

Won't know how bad, or how not dire the situation is until after the first 4-6 games.

For instance, the 49ers offense - Pre-Season 2011 looked god awful vs our Greg Williams led defense. They went on to score 24.1 PPG that season good for 9th in the league, but if you went strictly by pre-season you wouldn't have guessed. What did their 4 games look like?

Week 1 vs New Orleans L - 3-24
Week 2 vs Oakland W - 17-3
Week 3 vs Texans L 7-30
Week 4 vs Chargers W 20-17

That amounts to 11.8 PPG based on pre-season offering. They ended the season 13-3. I guarantee 100% there were a plethora of articles about how the offense was performing, how the Oline didni't look good, etc, no different than what you see today w/ the Saints.

Fact is, no one knows what were going to get until after we get it. Everything else is just assumptions. Included are some 2011 Articles, the last talks about how the o-line was in shambles, written 9/6/2011

Add that to the fact that we saw very very little of what this offense will be in the reg. season.

There is a bad case of Dennis Allen Delusion on this board so it's exaggerated here more than anywhere.

There is a group on this board who will preach doom and gloom if DA were handing out hundred dollar bills and ice cold beer as they enter the dome to watch the Saints play a home superbowl game later this year for some reason.

Maybe it'll be that the beer isn't cold or free enough. IDK
DC could walk on water and some people on here would say " See , you got your damn feet wet" And still call him Carrbage

The 49ers Offensive Line is extremely average and yet they finished 2nd in yards per game and 3rd in points per game. If this scheme is as similar as is suggested to the 49ers, the Saints don't need All Pros, they don't need great or even good play. Just average and sometimes a little bit above average. Is it really a coincidence the Saints top two candidates were both from the 49ers? They went after guys from an offensive scheme intentionally designed to not need elite talent in the Offensive Line.

Am I worried about the Saints Offensive Line? Yes, but at the same time, I won't be shocked at all if they do just fine. It sure feels like the Saints had a plan for their OC and knowing they couldn't fix the OL in a single offseason, are trying to build an offense that doesn't need the 2009 line to be cooking.

Derek Carr will give you a calll back in a few weeks

If they can follow through on their 'run first' plan and use effective play action, I can see the O-line issues being minimized.

I'm just scared to death of Penning getting blown up on the first snap and landing Carr on the injury list.

Ram had a degenerating knee. They never should have resigned him.

I think the RT position is the biggest question mark on the offensive line. I think the Saints can get by with Patrick and Saldiveri at one of the guard spots but Penning just seems to struggle to much in pass protection.
Patrick was average at best in preseason...
Saldiveri was a no-show...
This is why I was suprised that Hergel was put on the PS.

At least TP was at all practices and played in all the preseason games & he showed improvement!
