Oli Udoh got 1st team snaps at Right Tackle; Allen: “LG & RT are still open. Penning is progressing but Udoh will get a look at RT.” (1 Viewer)

This isn't a bad thing. Oduh can hold it down while Penning continues to develop on the right side and gets used to the new system. People like to pile on with him, but he had no offseason before his rookie year and no offseason before his 2nd year with injuries between both. This was the first offseason where he got a chance to develop and he still needs work in parts of his game. He's still young and lineman can play into their 30s so he has time on his side.

The Saints did not draft Penning as a DE in hopes of trying to convert him to Tackle in the pros.

Our rookie left tackle played right tackle in college and we switched him to the left side and he's hit the ground running.

Penning was terrible last season and his play this off-season still has the coaches concerned, so much so that a 7th round pick from the Vikings who played both T/G for them in a backup role is getting looks at RT because our first round pick has yet to solidify a position that's being handed to him.

You are absolutely right. He played DE and TE in high school then converted to OT in 2017, his redshirt season. He played ONE game at RT in 2021.

Let's add those games up.

Redshirted 2017 - converted from DE and TE.
2018 - Played in 4 games, no side specified.
2019 - Started 15 games at LT
Spring 2021 - Started 4 games at LT and 1 at RT
Fall 2021 - Started 12 games at LT

That's 31 games started at LT and 1 (ONE) at RT in his college career. So, 32 games at OT going into the NFL. Add the few starts he has got in the NFL and the injuries that have riddled his seasons and 1st TWO offseasons and you have a very inexperienced OT.

So he shouldn't have been drafted in the first round is what your saying.

The media has been pretty quiet about Hergel’s performance since the beginning of the second week but I haven’t heard about a missed assignment or pressure allowed yet. Any update on him?
