NFL Overtime rules change in regular season (1 Viewer)

I could go for that. I would guess that it would be more like college like I said where they get to go back-and-forth a couple of times before they force that issue. Still like that better than what we got now though.

Yep. This would sort of be a hybrid to college after the first two OTs.

Only thing I don’t like about college is that it goes from being regulation football, with punting and all, to just being a manufactured scoring contest, with the defense being put in a bad position at the start of each drive.

With this, you’re still playing real football, but if you allow your opponent to score on their first possession, it’s either win the game or lose it…no extending the game beyond your drive. Maybe even eliminate the game clock for that final, “sudden death” drive.

I think this is the next evolution of NFL overtime….forced game-ending situations.

I.E. If you get first possession and score a TD and convert your extra point, the other team must score a TD and go for two to end the game.

If you kick a field goal on your first possession, the other team must score a TD to end the game.
I like that. So, if the first possession team scores a TD, and have an incredibly gutsy (or foolhardy) coach and makes a 2 point conversion, I guess the process would continue. If the first possession team misses the post TD conversion, then an answering PAT would win. Sounds okay to me.

The problem with the college rules, as I understand them, is that the game can go on and on and on and on….,,,,
That’s excessive in my view.

Yeah I hadn’t considered the idea of Team A making that crazy decision, but I do think the option would need to exist, especially if their kicker had gotten hurt during the game.

The whole idea of this setup is to create a sudden death situation with the second possession team if team A scores, so I guess the best Team B would be able to do in that situation is tie the game to end it (for regular season).

I had the idea in mind to eliminate the game clock for Team B’s possession, but with your circumstance in mind, maybe you don’t eliminate the game clock and you have them kickoff if any time remains.

I only eliminated the game clock because I believe Team B deserves a full possession without game time circumstances as a factor.

I honestly believe that the shortening of the OT period is part of the owners' long game, and that is to increase the season to 18 games. To do that without making some time concessions would almost certainly be inviting roster increases... I think it's all just a trade off so they can make more money off us.

With all of this back & forward, tweaking of the OT rules, they are still going to have games ending with ties.

Honesty, tie games are ridiculous & complicated when it comes to both playoff seedings and drafts.

Yeah I really wish they had moved it to 15 minute quarters. So many of these OT games end up with the clock basically winding down almost down to zero at the end of Team A’s first possession.

At a minimal, Team B should at least be given a guaranteed full possession.

I also think there should be some sort of element that helps mitigate the risk of a tie. Those used to fly back in the day, but who wants to watch ties these days? It’s bad for the sport.

There’s gonna be more tweaks to this in the near future IMO.

It's the fair thing to do, but ultimately they need to just go the shootout route, best out of 3 or 5, or if they want to get wild, have a kicking competition best 3 or 5

The Pandora's box of BS as it relates to overtime was opened in 2011 -- in response to us beating the league's likely preference at the time to go to the Super Bowl -- and it's been tough to close ever since. Sudden death was the way to go. Now, it's just an extension of the whole "participation trophy" concept.

I wouldn’t say that. Is it really fair that a long football game gets decided by a coin toss?

The concept was always kind of silly TBH. I mean, our only SB trophy is pretty much all attributed to our opponent calling a coin flip incorrectly.

This is an offensive centric league these days, with rules heavily favoring the offense, offensive concepts being extremely advanced, not to mention kickers being more skilled than ever imagined.

Getting defensive stops isn’t as easy as it used to be when the sudden death concept first came into focus, and neither is the difficulty level of kicking a 50 yard game-winning field goal.

All these things have to be considered when comparing yester-year to today and why more efforts towards fairness is necessary. This is effectively a new game, a reset essentially, so both teams deserve equal shake.
