So just reading espn on the Panthers sale and the article had this little tidbit:

"The New Orleans Saints and the Denver Broncos are expected to be on the market in the next five years and the Tennessee Titans, which explored selling a third of the team last year, also could be a candidate for a turnover."

What do we think about this. Obviously Benson is on his last legs but I had been under the impression that a secession plan was fairly well worked out. Am I missing something or is this standard espn nonsense?

Succession - the coming of one person or thing after another in order, sequence on in the course of events.

Secession - an act or instance of seceding.

Wildly different!

Fair enough.

Question still stands. Just thought it was interesting they went out of the way to mention the Saints as being expected to be on sale.

I too thought it was extremely interesting that they mentioned the Saints first as ‘teams expected to be on the market in the next 5 yrs’.. Thanks BTW to the OP for starting a thread on this; i saw the ESPN article this morning and was hoping someone would start a thread about it, since i’m too lazy.

Accurate.

I dont know Gayle Benson personally and, while she may be a lovely woman— no one knows what anyone will do when literally Billions of dollars are dangled in front of their face... apparently she wasnt even a football fan until she met Benson circa 10 or 15 yrs ago, so i doubt there’s much loyalty there.. to the person who said ‘We KNOW she wont sell’— what makes you so confident? The Panthers team is expected to fetch around $2 billion , and i doubt that the Saints would be valued much less than that.. All’s i’m saying is that it’s an enormous amount of $$ to throw at anyone, much less someone who presumably doesnt have a ton of interest in running a football team... And who in La. has pockets deep enough to buy the team?? Sure you can throw out the usual 2 or 3 names, but there are many, many more people in other places with far deeper pockets.. I believe the Saints have a deal to remain in NOLA for the next 20 yrs or so, but those agreements arent worth the paper theyre printed on... i’m extremely concerned about what will happen after Benson passes away in the near future, if you couldnt tell.

I personally think it’s a bunch of ESPN throwing stuff against a wall and see what sticks. Yes Benson is in his last bit of time. No matter if it’s this year or ten years, the end is closer than the beginning. However, I get the impression with what Tom has been doing since he met Gayle that the team has a very well thought out plan of where it is going from the time Benson passes. Gayle’s loyalty is to New Orleans, that’s obvious. Also, as far as being an owner, I doubt Tom has much say anymore in the operations either. While he may not be senile, he is definitely of advanced age and his decision making is probably questionable. I’m assuming his lawyer team, Louscha, and Mueller essentially run the team at this point. Which I’m sure will continue. Now what happens after Gayle all depends. The way Benson split the stock into voting and non voting makes me wonder if the Saints are not in a generational trust such as the Hearst company and its holdings. That way one person can own the team (common stock) yet the inner circle of the trust owns or at least controls the voting stock.

The more ESPN migrates toward rumor, speculation and 24/7 entertainment, the less I care what they say.

In response to all of the worry: doesn't a vote by the owners need to be held in whether to move a team out of a city? I just can't see the NFL voting to move the Saints out of New Orleans.

NO would likely find local owners more than willing to keep them in town for the near future

Let's just hope none of this results in the cessation of the New Orleans Saints -- which might well happen should the team be up for sale.

Cessation -- the fact or process of ending or being brought to an end.

I actually thought about this as well, when I first heard about the family squabble. I also had the thought that when Benson has left us, I could see Gayle selling the team. If anything to end the relationship with the kids of Benson. Then again, I dont know the specifics of Mr. Bensons Last Will either. Just find it hard to believe he would leave out his kids-grandkids etc. with absolutely nothing....
