Bit of a long post but I looked this up to satisfy my own curiosity and thought others would be interested also. From 1985 to now (last 40 years) every selection the Saints made in the first two rounds and which Quarterbacks they could have selected. I didn’t list every QB available just the ones taken in the same round if any. Obviously we will never know if the Saints had went QB would they have drafted the next available or from the ones that went the same round but assuming that most teams grade players similarly I assumed the Saints wouldn’t draft a qb in the first that was originally drafted in 3rd or 4th or 6th etc. They wouldnt know the careers these QBs would have. Enough rambling here’s the list.

1985 saints 1st LB toles no QB drafted in first after saints pick. Saints 2nd Gilbert DT and again none.

1986 Saints 1st OT Dombroski. QB chuck long selected in first after Saints pick. Saints 2nd RB Hillard. QB Jack Trudeau select in second after Saints pick.

1987 Saints 1st DT Knight. QB Chris miller and Jim Harbaugh selected in first after Saints pick. Saints 2nd Wr Hill and none.

1988 Saints 1st FB Heyward. None. Saints 2nd WR perriman and none.

1989 Saints 1st DE Martin and none. Saints 2nd DB Massey. QB available BJ Tolliver.

1990 Saints 1st LB turnbull and none. Saints 2nd CB Buck and none.

1991 Saints 1st no pick (trade for Walsh I think). QBs available Dan McQuire and Todd Marinovich. Saints 2nd WR Carroll and none.

1992 Saints 1st RB Dunbar. QB available Tommy Maddox. Saints 2nd no pick (again Walsh trade) and none.

1993 Saint 1st OT Roaf and none. Saints 2nd LB Freeman and none.

1994 Saints 1st DE Johnson and None. 2nd RB Bates and none.

1995 Saints 1st pick LB Fields and none. 2nd FB Zellars. QBs available Todd Collins and Kordell Stewart.

1996 Saints 1st CB Molden and none. 2nd S Cherry. QB available Tony Banks.

1997 Saints 1st OG Naeole. QB available Jim Drunkenmiller. 2nd S Kelly. QB available Jake Plummer.

1998 Saints 1st OT Turley. None. 2nd TE Cleeland. QB available Charlie Batch.

1999 Saints RB Williams. QBs available Culpepper and Cade Mcnown. 2nd no pick (Williams trade) QB available Shaun King. Culpepper would have been gone by our original pick so couldn’t have stayed put and got him but imagine if we selected him instead of Williams.

2000 Saints 1st no pick. QBs available where we would have picked Chad Pennington. 2nd DE Howard. None.

2001 Saints 1st RB McAllister. None. 2nd no pick. QBs available Quincey Carter and Marquise Tuiasosopo.

2002 Saints 1st WR Stallworth. QB available Patrick Ramsey. 2nd C Bentley and none.

2003 Saints 1st DT Sullivan. QBs available Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, Rex Grossman. 2nd OT Stinchcomb. None.

2004 Saints 1st DE Smith. QB available J.P. Losman. 2nd WR Henderson. None.

2005 Saints 1st OT Brown. QBs available Aaron Rodgers and Jason Campbell. 2nd S Bullocks. None. If we had drafted Rodgers does SP still bring in DB the next year?

2006 Saints 1st RB Bush. QBs available Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler. 2nd S Harper. QB available Kellen Clemons and Tartaris Jackson.

2007 Saints 1st WR Meacham. None. 2nd Traded pick and None.

2008 Saints 1st DT Ellis. QB available Joe Flacco. 2nd CB Porter. QB available Brian Brohm and Chad Henne.

2009 Saints 1st DB Jenkins. QB available Josh Freeman. 2nd Traded (shockey). None.

2010 Saints 1st CB Robinson. No qb selected after us because we had the last pick. 2nd OT Brown. Again last pick. Jimmy Clausen did go high in the 3rd for what it’s worth.

2011 Saints 1st DE Jordan and RB Ingram. None. 2nd no pick (Ingram) none.

2012 Saints 1st no pick (Ingram trade). None. 2nd forfeited. None.

2013 Saints 1st S Vaccaro. QB available EJ Manuel. 2nd Forfeited. None.

2014 Saints 1st WR Cooks. QB available Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater.
2nd CB Jean-Baptiste. QB available Jimmy Garoppolo.

2015 Saints 1st OT Peat and LB Anthony. None. 2nd LB Kikaha. None.

2016 Saints 1st DT Rankins. QB available Paxton Lynch. 2nd WR Thomas. QB available Christian Hackenberg.

2017 Saints first CB Lattimore. Qb available Deshaun Watson. OT Ram. None. 2nd S Williams. Qb available Deshone Kizer.

2018 Saints first DE Davenport. Qb available Lamar Jackson. Big miss imo. 2nd no pick (traded) None.

2019 Saints first no pick (Davenport trade) None. 2nd C McCoy. None.

2020 Saints 1st C Ruiz. Qb available Jordan Love. Another miss. 2nd traded. None.

2021 Saints 1st DE Turner. None. 2nd LB Werner. Qb available Kyle Trask.

2022 Saints 1st WR Olave and OT Penning. Qb available Kenny Pickett. 2nd CB Taylor. None.

2023 Saints 1st DT Bryan Bresee. None.
2nd DE Foskey None.

2024 Saints 1st OT Fuaga. None. 2nd CB McKinstry. None.

I double checked everything but still may have made a mistake since I looked each year up and scrolled through the picks.

Id trade Cherry and Molden for Tony Banks.

And also worth noting Of QBs that have completed their career, Chad Penning has the 2nd Highest All-Time completion % behind only Drew Brees and Matty "stinky pants" Ryan as much as we give him grief is 3rd All-time.
I was in high school that year and it was the first year I actively followed the draft and read mock drafts. I was absolutely convinced we had just got a future HoF player in Molden 🤣🤣😞

Lol, I remember living near the Bay Area in that time of the 2005 draft. Brooks was going into his final year with us and I remember everyone gushing over Rodgers and rightfully so. I was shocked that we didn’t take him. Then I felt sorry for him as the cameras kept panning to him every time his name was passed up. I remember a commentator saying “He’s going to make a lot of teams pay for passing on him”. Yup, that’s what he did.

Looks like in the last decade only Lamar Jackson was a miss. You could debate Jordan Love but the simple truth is that he wasn't ready to start. Packers really did do a phenomenal job maintain patience with him while he put in major work and it paid off huge for both.

And while it easy to say we missed on Lamar (along with everyone else), we still had DB coming off 5,200 yards and 37 TDs.
Lamar didn't really make a lot of sense for us at the time, and we had an excellent 2017 draft.

Yup. Not complaining at all. The biggest miss for me, was Sean Payton spotting a future franchise QB to take over when Drew Brees retired, and not willing to trade up a few spots for him. Or perhaps that was Loomis. Either way, dumb. If you're targeting a franchise QB ever, at any spot, don't ever wait for them to fall in your lap. Dumbest philosophy ever.

Picking late, the "good" QB's are gone. Picking early and having a chance to grab a perceived top QB - maybe we shouldn't miss this opportunity.

You should add the best QB's out of the later rounds. For example, Dak Prescott in 2016. Not that i'm a Dak fan but he is objectively the best QB we missed out on in that draft. No one is upset about not taking Hackenberg. Well I'm sure Christian's mother is upset.

I thought about adding that but wanted to see what we missed in the first two rounds. If we were going pick a qb in the first two rounds of 2016 it wouldn’t have been Prescott. I mean it’s obvious we missed on drafting Brady too but had we taken a qb round 1-2 that year it wouldn’t have been Brady because we wouldn’t have known how his career would play out. For those reasons I limited it to only QBs selected in round 1 that were still available when the saints picked and same criteria for round two.
